Industrial activity on Madeira island is becoming increasingly diversified, with flower, sugar cane, wickerwork and embroidery industries playing important roles in Madeira’s economy. Nevertheless, there are still smaller industries that target local consumption (pasta, sugar, honey, rum and other beverages, etc.). Industry is overall more centralised in the municipalities of Funchal, Câmara de Lobos, Machico and Santa Cruz.
Madeiran economy is strongly based on agriculture and many people depend on it. Fortunately, since the land is extremely fertile and the subtropical climate is very favourable, it’s possible to grow here almost everything, including tropical fruits from which banana is the main exportation product.
Another world-renowned product is Madeira wine. Consumed before or after meals, this is an extremely versatile wine that can also be used for cooking, especially Madeira sauce, but only the original Madeira wine will keep its flavour when cooked.
