On December 1st, the Christmas lights in Funchal downtown and the amphitheatre were switched on, and the entire island will be illuminated in a dazzling display of light and joy for the holiday season. This marks the start of the 2023 Christmas and New Year's celebrations in Madeira, where everything will be aglow and sparkling.
The city's "lights" will be turned on from 18:00 to 01:00 until January 7th. There are some exceptions: on the 25th and 30th, they are on until 04:00, and on the 23rd, 24th, and 31st, until 06:00 am.
The main street, Avenida Arriaga, welcomes the festive spirit with the impressive Nativity Crib, full of wonderful details, and the Christmas Market, where people can buy flowers and taste some of the island’s traditional flavours. There will also be an embroidery and handcraft exhibition, living statues, choirs, orchestras and other musical performances in front of the Cathedral and in several gardens.
