This church is the pride of the population of Santo António, not only because of its dimension but also because of its history.
Due to the ever growing population and the damages caused to the old church by the earthquake of 1748, the construction of a bigger temple featuring six altars had become necessary. Between 1922 and 1928 this church has seen several improvements, one of which is the big clock that was placed on one of the two imposing towers and which still sets the daily rhythm of Santo Antónios inhabitants. |
