Madeira, Estreito da Calheta

Already in the 15th century this originally very small settlement – therefore the name ‘Estreito’ meaning ‘slim/narrow’ in Portuguese – had developed into a respectable village.

Established as a parish in the second half of the sixteenth century, Estreito da Calheta has also a parish church, built at around the same time, with the beautiful image of its patron saint ‘Our Lady of Grace’.

The homes of the residents can often be found sitting between green vineyards and banana plantations, both typical agricultural activities of this region.
