Funchal city and Historical Areas

Rich in many aspects, it takes more than one day to explore the city of Funchal, as it offers visitors a wide and surprising range of places to see, which are part of a vast natural and built heritage.

Strolling through these historical nucleuses means getting to know the history of Madeira a little better, particularly of Funchal, by travelling back in time and enjoying its cultural, historical and museological heritage.

From the flourishing 'sugar town' of the 15^th and 16^th centuries, many buildings have survived until today. Most of this built heritage can be found in the centre of Funchal, being divided into three historically important areas: ‘São Pedro', ‘Santa Maria' and ‘Sé’.
