Funchal’s Historical Areas

Rich in many aspects, it takes more than one day to explore the city of Funchal, as it offers visitors a wide and surprising range of places to see, which are part of a vast natural and built heritage.

From the flourishing 'sugar town' of the 15^th and the 16^th century many buildings have survived until today. Most of this built heritage you will find in the centre of Funchal, which can be divided into three historically important areas: ‘São Pedro', ‘Santa Maria' and ‘Sé’.
