Palace of the Governing Board (former Mercy Institution of Funchal)
In 1685 a piece of land near the Sé Cathedral was allocated to the construction of a hospital for the poor, later named Santa Isabel Hospital, that took up its service in 1686.

In 1927 considerable renovation works were started, and in 1931, when the construction of the new ‘Marmeleiros’ Hospital was finished, the patients from the Santa Isabel Hospital were transferred to the new place.

In 1933 the old hospital complex was ceded to the Governing Board of the district. Today some departments of the Regional Government occupy this building that still boasts several interesting architectural elements, such as Portuguese glazed tiles, recovered from the 17th century.
