This spectacular, interactive museum allows the visitor to go back in time on a virtual journey and ‘relive’ in chronological sequence the archipelago’s great historic events, from its volcanic birth 14 million years ago to the first hydroplane landing in Madeira, from the times of the Infant D. Henrique to Napoleon and Churchill.

The Madeira Story Centre also offers a multifunctional panoramic terrace equipped with telescopes, a theme café and a souvenir shop with exclusive Madeira-related articles.

The Madeiran star Cristiano Ronaldo personal museum located in Funchal shows an impressive life story collection of all the trophies conquered throughout his football career.


Sacred Art Museum

This museum features religious sculptures from the 16th to the 18th century and sacred jewellery from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as collections of paintings, goldsmiths from the 15th and 19th centuries. Flemish painting, which dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries and the examples of Portuguese painting from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.


Universo de Memórias

Location: Calçada do Pico, Funchal

This ‘Universe of Memories’ (Universo de Memórias) was founded and financed by the former Secretary of Tourism, João Carlos Abreu, and reflects his life as traveler, journalist and public personality. Ten thousand pieces such as books, ceramics, paintings and bronze objects from all over the world are exhibited in 14 rooms in a house located right opposite the entrance to the Quinta das Cruzes museum. There is also a Tea House in this museum with free entrance. 


Núcleo Museológico da Cidade do Açúcar-CMF (Sugar Museum)

Location: Praça Colombo, 5, Funchal

In this exposition especially dedicated to sugar, the visitor learns about the role that the fabrication and exportation of sugar played in the economic and social life Madeira’s and its cultural and artistic influences during the 15th and 16th century. On display are also findings that resulted from excavations made and dating back to those centuries.


Henrique e Francisco Franco Museum

As the name says, the Henrique and Francisco Franco brothers created the masterpieces presented here. This museum is dedicated to the dissemination of the work of these two brothers from Madeira, but also to its conservation, study and presentation. Here you will find oil paintings, sculptures, drawings and engravings. Henrique Franco dedicated himself more to painting, while Francisco Franco was a sculptor.


Frederico de Freitas House Museum

Here you will find several thematic exhibitions such as tiles, religious sculptures, furniture and pottery, the old residence of the Condes da Calçada. The pieces are exposed to reflect the environment in which the collector lived. 


Quinta das Cruzes Museum

In this former residence of the Morgados das Cruzes you will find Portuguese and foreign furniture from the 16th to 19th centuries, Porcelains and Portuguese faience from the 17th to the 19th century, Portuguese sculpture, cribs and paintings. In this space there is also a beautiful garden and an archaeological park. 


Funchal Natural History Museum

This is the place to find the fauna, flora and geology of Madeira Island. Created in 1929 by the Municipality of Funchal, it also boasts an aquarium (with 15 tanks on display, where you can see the most important examples of the marine fauna of Madeira) and the Municipal Library. This is the oldest museum in the archipelago of Madeira and there you will find more than 41 thousand specimens of animal species. It is installed in the Palace of St. Peter, in Funchal, a building of outstanding Portuguese civil architecture of the XVIII century. In this space there is also the Aromatic and Medicinal Plants Garden, where, in its 560 m2 can observe dozens of aromatic, medicinal, indigenous and endemic plants of Madeira. 


Wine Museum Madeira

If you want to know more about Madeira Wine, this museum is a ‘must see’. Opened in 1984, in this space you will find anything from pictures to machinery, ethnographic objects all related to the culture and production of wine. In this museum there is an exhibition of permanent photography, which depicts the winemaking activity in Madeira.


Adegas de S. Francisco- Madeira Wine Lodges

Location: Avenida Arriaga, 28, Funchal

In the oldest Madeira Wine cellars, dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, you can see documents of the English companies that created the Madeira Wine Company, books and machinery testifying the old days of Madeira Wine production, as well as a 17th century mill. In this space there is a tasting room where you can enjoy an interesting painting by the Austrian painter Max Rommer who lived in Madeira between 1920 and 1950. These cellars, which also arouse interest in the baroque civil architecture, also has warehouses, convenience store and an exhibit area.


IBTAM (Núcleo Museológico IVBAM – Instituto do Vinho, do Bordado e do Artesanato da Madeira)

This place exhibits Madeira embroidery, side by side with traditional costumes and furniture. In the Museum Center of IVBAM you will find several pieces of this type of embroidery, made between the 60s of the XIX century and the 30s of the XX century, and framed in the environment of the height, with furniture, decorative pieces and regional tapestries to complement the scenery. In this space there is also information about the various phases of the production process of the Wood Embroidery, as well as photos that demonstrate the aspect of the factories in the early twentieth century.


Electricity Museum

In this museum, housed in the building where the former Funchal Thermal Power Station was built in 1870, you will find rare machinery and equipment from over a century related to electricity generation, as well as documents proving the evolution of the electricity installation in Madeira. This museum has an exhibition with various thematic areas, on the evolution of types of lighting in Funchal, the electrification of the archipelago and on energy sources.


Ribeira Brava

Madeira's Ethnographical Museum

This museum gathers ethnographical objects relating to the regional culture and society. The Ethnographic Museum of Madeira is housed in the old brandy factory in the village of Ribeira Brava. Created in 1996, the exhibition area of this museum is organized by themes: traditional trade (grocery store), productive activities (wine production, cereals, linen and fishing), transport and domestic area (kitchen and bedroom). This museum is dedicated to the research, conservation and promotion of the ethnography and culture of Madeira.


Calheta

Mudas. Contemporary Art Museum of Madeira

The Contemporary Art Museum, its design a piece of art itself, which was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe 2005 architecture award, has a programme of temporary expositions featuring all kinds of arts and styles by local, national and international artists. There are also frequent dance, theatre and other artistic performances. The Contemporary Art Museum was designed by the architect Paulo David, is situated on a hill overlooking the village of Calheta. (New Webcam in Calheta)


Machico

Whale Museum

An interesting collection of artefacts related to the whale fishing industry, which was very important in Madeira until the 1970's.
