Covered with exotic vegetation, Madeira is a fascinating natural ecological reserve and two thirds of the total area of the island is protected.
Inserted in the Macaronesia region, the archipelago has a natural heritage of undeniable beauty and importance, mainly scientific, being its maximum exponent the Laurissilva forest, which has been a natural world heritage site of UNESCO since 1999.
The island's wealth is unique with some 22,000 hectares of Laurissilva, not to mention the variety in terms of fauna and flora, with rare and unique species in the world.
With about 740 km2 of area, on the island of Madeira 2/3 are classified as nature reserves and protected areas, both on land and at sea. Protected areas include Madeira's Laurissilva Forest, Garajau and Rocha do Navio nature reserves, the Madeira Natural Park itself and the nature reserves of the Desertas and Selvagen Islands.
