Madeira is synonymous with Big Game Fishing due to its steeply descending ocean floor and is part of the Blue Marlin Fishing World Cup competition. The competition takes place on the 4th July throughout the Atlantic Ocean and is said to be the most unique, rewarding and unforgettable tournament in the world. According to the rulebook, the winner is the individual who captures the largest Blue Marlin, which must be over 500 pounds in weight, and there must be photographic evidence as well as witness statements. Those competing off the coast of Madeira have won the cup on several occasions, and as such, many of the island's marinas have experienced crews and boats suitable for all levels of big game fishing.
