• What’s On for September 2022

September swings into action in a big way as Funchal, surrounding towns and villages celebrate, the annual grape harvest with the Madeira Wine Festival, which runs from the 27th of August to the 17th of September. With static displays, wine tasting and a great festival atmosphere, it’s the perfect opportunity to take part in one of the islands most memorable events.
Ponta Delgada on the 31st of August to 4th September plays host to one of the most significant pilgrimage festivals known on the island with the Santissimo Sacramento (Arraial do Bom Jesus), which has people travelling all over the island to take part in the religious ceremonies and enjoy the great entertainment.

The village of Porto da Cruz celebrates its Grape and Farmer Harvest on the 1st to 3rd September honouring the parish’s excellent winemaking tradition.
Blandy’s Wine Lodge in Funchal celebrates the wine festival from the 5th – 9th, with a series of activities including wine tasting, tours and the infamous grape treading.
From the 8th to the 10th, the Wine Harvest Festival in Estreito Câmara de Lobos continues with the all-important treading of the grapes, an ethnographic parade, regional gastronomy, folklores, music, fun and festivities. Between the 9th and 10th, the Madeira Classic Car Rally will have the islands classic car enthusiasts racing along Madeira’s roads.
On the 14th, 21st, and 28th, Quinta do Furão in Santana will host a number of events, including lunches, wine tastings, and traditional grape treading.

History lovers are in for a treat during the Columbus Festival which takes place on Porto Santo between the 14th and 17th, with re-enactments of the explorer's life in Porto Santo and his stay in Madeira, 16th-century markets and so much more; this is a must-see event!
Moving back to Madeira, Ponta do Pargo Apple Festival from the 14th and 17th will have you celebrating all things apple. The festival is full of fun and lively entertainment.
Caniçal will be holding its beautiful and moving Festival of Our Lady of Mercy (Nossa Senhora da Piedade) on the 15th and 17th. This is one of the oldest festivals on the island, and like all things Madeira, the event combines religion with good humour, food, drink and plenty of music.
On the 16th and 29th, "Concertos L," a concert series that fuses traditional and modern musical styles with Portuguese and worldwide music, will return to Estalagem da Ponta do Sol.

The Trans Madeira Enduro Mountain Bike Race Autumn Edition will be held from 19th to 23rd of September, with riders racing more than 200 kilometres over five days in the world's most diversified terrain, allowing them to discover the island.
The Apple Cider Festival (Mostra da Cidra), provides lively entertainment in Santo da Serra on the 23rd and 24th. Demonstrations include a parade, apple exhibitions, the all-important cider sampling, music and as always, plenty to eat.
The capital, Funchal celebrates World Tourism Day, as always takes place on the 27th with many of the gardens and museums offering free admission.
To round out the month, the Passion Fruit and Derivatives Exhibition will be held on the Ribeira Brava waterfront from September 29th to October 1st. There will be traditional food and drink stalls as well as plenty of entertainment at the event.
