• New Ponta do Pargo Golf Course in Calheta

Madeira Island will inaugurate within three years, the new golf course that will be built in the parish of Ponta do Pargo, an investment of 12.8 million euros.

The project, which aims to boost the whole village and further enhance the tourism offer of the Best Island Destination in the World, even started more than a decade ago, and about 60% of the construction work (corresponding to its 1st phase) was completed. However, in 2009, the financial crisis got in the way and other priorities were taken into account, so it was only now that the Regional Government of Madeira found the conditions and a way to finance the whole project.

And it has already received the "green light" from the Court of Auditors to restart the work, as it will have in its possession the "visa" that confers the necessary legality to this operation of the Madeira Executive, which intends to finance a large part of the work with recourse to the sale of public lands, and through a contract-programme with the Government owned company, "Ponte Oeste - Sociedade de Promoção e Desenvolvimento da Zona Oeste da Madeira", responsible for the work.

This way, Madeira will soon have its golf tourism offer strengthened, totalizing four golf courses, which are very sought after by its players, mainly for the beauty of the surrounding nature, as well as for the quality of its technical features.

Recently, the Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture, Eduardo Jesus, expressed his opinion in defence of golf, as he considers that Madeira "cannot conceive the tourist product without the existence of golf", as the Pearl of the Atlantic "gains a lot" with this kind of offer, which helps immensely the local economy.
