It’s March, and spring is ready to burst into action, and what better way to end winter and welcome spring than with a series of exciting events?

The first edition of the 'Bitcoin Atlantis' conference will be held from 1st to 3rd at the Barreiros Stadium in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. This technology conference is expected to attract over 5,000 people from all over the world, with a hundred speakers, including well-known figures in the global high-tech industry.

Join the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra® for their weekly concerts at the Legislative Assembly of Madeira (Assembleia Legislativa da Madeira) on March 1st, 8th, 15th, and 23rd at 21:00 for a unique blend of classic tunes from around the world. The annual Book Fair takes place from March 1st to 10th. Held in various locations around the centre of Funchal, the book fair comprises of book launches, concerts, exhibitions and of course books. Who knows what little treasure you may find?

Join the Funchal Guitar Quartet for a Music in the Chapels concert on March 2nd at 20:30 at Capela de Santo António in Ponta do Sol. Initiated in 2013, this event showcases Madeira's musical talent and traditions in iconic venues such as Santo António and São Sebastião chapels. Skilled local musicians will perform in a variety of styles, including traditional, classical, and philharmonic pieces.

The Ori Porto Santo pedestrian orienteering event will take place on Porto Santo Island on March 2 and 3. The event, organised by the Clube de Montanha do Funchal, consists of two courses that qualify participants for the Madeira Pedestrian Orienteering Cup.

The XXXVII Madeira Music Festival is back with a vibrant ten-day programme showcasing a mix of renowned national and international musicians alongside emerging talents. The Madeira Classical Orchestra will hold its first grand concert on March 2nd at 21:00 in Funchal Cathedral. The festival will continue with captivating performances on March 3rd, 8th, 9th, 10th, 15th, 16th, 17th, and 22nd, and culminate with the Closing Concert on March 23rd. Porto Santo will be holding its annual Porto Santo Nature Trail between the 16th and 17th. This Nature Trail event comprises of three races – 42km, 21km and the short 7.5km. A must for runners who want to experience something a little different.

On March 17th, visit Prazeres' pedagogical farm (Quinta Pedagógica dos Prazeres) for the Scarecrow exhibition, which begins at 11:00 a.m. after Sunday mass at Prazeres Parish in Calheta. This event features imaginative scarecrow designs created by local artists to honour traditional farming practices. Scarecrows will be on display in their gardens throughout the year.

Remaining with a natural theme the Madeira Forest and Tree Walk in the Funchal Ecological Parque is scheduled for the 21st. Teaming up with FNAC they will be hosting a variety of events including walks, talks and tree planting possibilities.

Staying on an outdoor theme is the ‘Earth Hour Night Run, which takes place in Santa Cruz at 20:30 on the 23rd. Celebrated in over 7,000 cities, the Planet Earth Run reminds us of how fragile our planet is and the need for conservation as the symbolic switching off of lights for one hour takes place in cities across the globe. This event is just one of many activities planned across Madeira Island in honour of Earth Hour. As part of Santa Cruz City Council's Environment Week, SPEA Madeira will actively participate by organising educational birdwatching sessions and free activities at Casa da Cultura de Santa Cruz, Quinta do Revoredo.

The Chocolate Market Fair takes place on the third floor of the Farmers Market (Mercado dos Lavradores) from the 25th to the 28th, with Funchal's Best Chocolate Cake Competition on the 28th. The event runs from 9:30 to 18:00, with the exception of the last day, which closes at 13:00. Don't miss it!
