The neighbouring island of Porto Santo will soon have a new Health Unit built from scratch by the Madeira Regional Government, which will be completed in September 2025.

The executive from Madeira will proceed with the construction of a new healthcare infrastructure, aimed at providing support to the approximately five thousand inhabitants (and visitors) of that small island, which is a 15-minute plane ride away and separated by a three-hour regular ferry trip to the island of Madeira. The latter already has around 260 thousand inhabitants.

The works related to the first phase of the project, entrusted to the companies 'Tecnovia/Farrobo,' are already underway and will cost around 4.2 million euros, with the total cost of public investment rising to 9 million euros.

The future Local Health Unit of Porto Santo aims to provide the necessary medical and clinical assistance services to the users of the "Golden Island", counting for that purpose on the creation of a Local Health Unit and a Continuous Care Unit in a logic of extending the existing services of the Madeira Central and University Hospital.

It is worth mentioning that in extreme cases, acute patients from the island of Porto Santo always have access to emergency air transportation to the island of Madeira, provided by various aircraft from the Portuguese Air Force, which are based at the airport on that island.
