• Overnight stays in Madeira

The two million overnight stays barrier in Madeira's tourist accommodation was surpassed for the first time, making this first quarter of the year the best ever registered in the Best Island Destination in the World.

In March 2023 alone, overnight stays in Madeira Island exceeded 855.8 thousand, contributing to surpass the 2 million mark for the first quarter of a year, which translates as "an increase of 32.7% compared to the same month of the previous year (644.8 thousand overnight stays in March 2022)", according to the Madeira Regional Statistics Office (DREM).

From January to March 2023, "the overnight stays in the total tourism accommodation in Madeira registered an increase of 52.8% over the same period of the previous year, approaching 2.3 million" and, "hotels accounted for 74.6% of overnight stays (638.8 thousand) in March 2023, growing 25.8% year-on-year, while local accommodation (22.8% of the total) grew 60.3% and rural tourism (2.5% of the total), 43.9%," indicates the DREM.

Regarding the main source markets, "it is observed that the French market stood out, recording the highest growth of 42.9%, followed by the German and British markets, with increases of 31.9% and 10.3%," while "the national market, the overnight stays also recorded an increase compared to March 2022 (+46.9%).

With regard to the bed occupancy rate of tourist accommodation and "in the month in reference, was 63.2%, 9.3 percentage points (p.p.) above that observed in the same month (53.9%)," and in turn, "the occupancy-room rate reached 73.5% (62.3% in March 2022)," said the same government source.
