• Ribeira da Janela

Ribeira da Janela is a calm and tranquil parish of Porto Moniz municipality, located in a mountainous area and whose main economic activities are related to agriculture and rural tourism accommodation. At the mouth of the stream there is an impressive rock that rises from the sea and has an opening that resembles a window (Ribeira da Janela is actually named after this unique rock). In this area you’ll find a pebble beach, as well as parking spaces, toilet facilities and showers. Nossa Senhora da Encarnação Church is another interesting stop when visiting this parish.

Near the regional road is the only campsite on the island, with several services and excellent conditions for campers. There is also a great leisure and picnic area in the mountains, Fanal, where you can use the public barbecue grill and relax in communion with nature, especially the Laurissilva Forest and an amazing lagoon.

In this parish, besides many pathways (veredas), you’ll find one of the most magical walks on the island, Levada dos Cedros — follow the levada and admire the beautiful lush green landscape. When reaching a lookout, you’ll be able to see Ribeira da Janela at the bottom.
