Due to its diversity and climate, Madeira is an island of sporting activities whether it is the local athletics club or activities run and organised by many of the local sporting bodies.

With a vast complex of excellent indoor and outdoor sporting facilities, the choice of sporting activities is as wide as it is varied. The Major football teams, Club Sport Marítimo (CS Marítimo), Clube Desportivo Nacional (C.D Nacional), Clube de Futebol Andorinha (C.F Andorinha), Clube de Futebol União da Madeira (C.F. União) and Sporting Clube da Madeira, all include several other sports clubs within their own complexes offering a wide selection of sporting events and hobby sports from roller hockey, handball, fencing and athletics.

However, it is not just the football teams that focus on sports, as games such as handball (Madeira S.A.D. and Club Sports da Madeira) and basketball (CAB Madeira) have their own clubs, associations and training events.

Notwithstanding the variety of land events, organisations such as Clube Naval do Funchal, offer a wide range of water based activities including canoeing, surfing, sailing and more land based disciplined sports such as karate, judo and athletics for both able bodied and disabled participants of all ages.
