Funchal, Madeira new promenade and liners pier
Madeira’s new promenade, marina, liners pier, park area and bathing area in the heart of Funchal makes a beautiful city even better.
The project will be finished in December 2014.
Funchal Madeira new mega project is almost complete after two years of construction. The cost of the project was approximately 300 Million Euros. The project consisted of widening and redirecting the flow of the two rivers either side of Funchal city, the construction of the a new liners pier directly in front of the Cathedral and extending the capacity of Funchal harbor to five cruise liners.
A new beach area has been built and an extension to existing Yacht marina. Funchal, Madeira has been a cruise liner destination from more then 100 years and is considered to be one of the two most spectacular harbour destinations in the world with Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
As Madeira is always summer most cruse liners visit during the winter months, September onwards. The number of cruise ships visiting Funchal Madeira can be up to 75 liners per month, which makes it one of the Worlds busiest winter destinations.
Funchal City centre is just a 200 metres walk from the liners piers and is popular for shopping, museums, gardens always in bloom through out the winter, open air cafes especially the Ritz Madeira on the main street with its live music and great for people watching. The Ritz Madeira also features the Sian Lesley Gala Dinner show every Friday and Saturday night.

With the new seafront promenade finished Funchal gains a new viewing point for the spectacular Firework display, which in 2006 was awarded by the Guinness Book of Records the largest firework display in the world.
Madeira has possibly one of Europe’s largest New Years celebrations with more then 100,000 persons in the city and more than 25,000 from cruise ships to watch the fireworks. The celebrations continue until 10 o’clock the following morning, the number of cruse ships in Madeira can number up to 14 and take turns to berth in the harbor. The city becomes one big Carnival with bands, dancing, music and street parades. With an average temperature of 20 Celsius (°C) degrees or 70 Fahrenheit (°F), street cafes and esplanades are always full.
Christmas and New Year’s are one of the best times to visit the Island of Madeira.
