Madeira has been a popular tourist destination for centuries and travel to and from the island has progressed from sailing vessels, steamers, seaplanes to modern jet engine aircraft, all of which has enabled the travelling public to enjoy the islands unique charm.

Formerly a health tourist destination, the islands temperate sub-tropical climate now appeals to all ages including those desperate to get away from the cold dark winters of northern Europe and Scandinavia.

Situated three and a half hours flying time away from the UK and many other European airports and four hundred miles off the West African coast, the island provides a wealth of activities and options for both winter and summer travellers. While sports enthusiasts will enjoy a wide variety of sporting activities including diving, canyoning and paragliding the islands cultivated and wild flora and fauna, levadas and often challenging topography appeal to both young and old alike.

The capital, Funchal, changes with the seasons and hosts a wide variety of festivals and events, including the vibrant and noisy Carnival, the stunningly beautiful Flower Festival and sporting events such as the Madeira Wine Car Rally. Also, the islands outdoor lifestyle and coffee culture provide a dramatic contrast with Northern Europe encouraging visitors to relax, unwind and enjoy a sense of freedom.

Madeira’s Cristiano Ronaldo airport is unique in many ways especially the runway which is supported by 180 concrete pillars and is ranked one of the top 15 airports that pilots love flying too. Only recently the new Airbus A321NEO spent 90 minutes performing a series of circuit and bumps at the airport before flying back to Toulouse.

Travelling to Madeira couldn’t be simpler as there are daily flights from some 50 plus airports across Europe and the U.K. and a myriad of different companies operate from the U.K. and Europe. The most common U.K. carriers are British Airways, Jet2, Easyjet, TUI Flight and Portugália.
