• Aedes Aegypti Mosquito

The activity of the mosquito 'Aedes aegypti' has recently registered an increase on the island of Madeira, mainly due to climatic conditions that are favourable to the reproduction of the insect.

Madeira's Regional Health Department recently alerted that the activity of the 'Aedes aegypti' mosquito population may increase in the coming days, as the rainfall recorded in the last few weeks created conditions for the accumulation of water in small ponds, which enhances the reproduction capacity of this species.

Despite the fact that there is no "dengue" disease in Madeira, authorities advise taking certain precautions, as the heatwave expected this weekend may significantly increase the population of this mosquito, which is a carrier of the referred disease, hence the warnings to take precautionary measures.

Avoiding the presence of stagnant water and small puddles in yards and private properties is one way of helping to reduce the breeding grounds for the species. On the other hand, the population should protect themselves by using repellents and wearing appropriate clothing. These are some of the measures that can help control this mosquito population.

Nevertheless, the regional authorities have an active surveillance system all year round, with hundreds of traps placed at strategic locations in order to control the population of this insect, which is practically limited to the city of Funchal.
