The island of Madeira was awarded the "Best Wine of the Year" at the 10th edition of the Portugal Wine Competition.

The recently awarded Madeiran "nectar" can be found in the 2001 bottles of 'Henriques & Henriques Sercial', produced by the company of the same name. This wine won in the "Fortified" category, a notable achievement given the strong competition, as there were a total of 1,385 wine references entered in the competition.

To get an idea of the significance of this event, 139 members of the Grand Jury were mobilised, who in turn selected 423 wines. In total, 35 wines were awarded the "Grand Gold" distinction, 101 received "Gold," and 280 were awarded "Silver."
