On Thursday, December 1st, Funchal downtown and amphitheatre will be the first areas to have the Christmas lighting switched on. This marks the start of the 2016 Christmas and New Year’s Festivities in Madeira.
The main street, Avenida Arriaga, welcomes the festive spirit with the impressive Nativity Crib, full of wonderful details, and the Christmas Market, where people can buy flowers and taste some of the island’s traditional flavours. Don’t miss this switch-on event on Ritz Madeira live webcam and follow everything that will happen here.
There will also be an embroidery and handcraft exhibition, choirs, orchestras and other musical performances in front of the Cathedral and in several gardens.
In the next few days, the whole island will be sparkling and glowing for this festive period. A traditional event not to be missed is the Night of the Farmers' Market — on the night of the 23rd, people join in the streets in front of the Farmers' Market to buy the last ingredients for the Christmas meal, sing Xmas carols or just hang out with friends or family.
