• Dendrobium Por do Sol No Funchal

Dendrobium Por do Sol no Funchal is a new hybrid orchid species created on Madeira Island and registered by Madeiran Pedro Spínola, who recently received certification from the Royal Horticultural Society on June 13, 2023.

"Madeira is a garden". This is a very old and world-renowned expression precisely because the island of Madeira is, in fact, an idyllic place to house the various species of flowers, plants, and trees. Nature finds in this Atlantic island a subtropical climate conducive to the adaptation of countless indigenous and endemic species, but also suitable for those that are introduced to this archipelago, as they easily proliferate based on the mild temperatures throughout the year. They benefit from the ideal characteristics of sun exposure, which recreate authentic sanctuaries for fragile and demanding species across the entire island.

The hybrid, now registered by the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society), thus gained the name of the Madeiran capital. Behind this decision lies the place of development of the new orchid, conceived in Funchal by a Madeiran. This hybridization results from the crossing between the species 'Dendrobium goldschimdtianum' and 'Dendrobium tiongii'.

According to the botanist Pedro Spínola, the choice of the name "Por do Sol no Funchal" to baptise the new orchid also happens because he considers that the new orchid harmoniously portrays the warm, golden, and splendorous tones resulting from a sunset over the city of Funchal. Remember that the word "Funchal" itself originated from another plant very common in Funchal, the "fennel".

The municipalities of Calheta, Câmara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, and São Vicente, which belong to the Pearl of the Atlantic, each already have a hybrid orchid with their own name. Now it was the turn of the capital of Madeira, Funchal, to have its orchid.
