Financed in 90% by Community funds, the 'Fishmetrics' traceability system assures a control at the food safety level and reveals to the final customer data about the fish consumed in Madeira Island.

The system, named 'Fishmetrics', is being installed as of this week in the fish auctions of Funchal, Caniçal, Paul do Mar and Porto Moniz. Through the attribution of a "QR-code" label, the client will be able to access diverse information in real time, in Portuguese, but also in English, even before making his purchase, as to the date and origin of the fish he intends to buy, and even, which is the name of the vessel that caught it.

The platform was publicly presented this week, and at the time the Director of Inspection and Control Services of the Regional Fisheries Directorate, Nuno Gouveia, said that "in commercial terms it is an added value because it is possible to know the origin of the product". He admitted that he intends to "privilege the fish that is landed at the fish auctions in Madeira", and on the other hand, the final client will have access to "all the information that goes into a database and allows other types of controls to be carried out, such as the identification of the species and its length, if it is in accordance with the legislation in force", stated Nuno Gouveia.

In turn, the regional secretary for Sea and Fisheries, Teófilo Cunha, affirmed that from now on, there will be "a control from the sea to the plate and for demanding customers this system will fill a very important area", he predicted.
