• Altars of Saint John

The popular saints' festivities are celebrated with great liveliness throughout the country, especially in Madeira.

After the festivities of Saint Anthony (Santo António), now it is time to celebrate a saint much cherished by the people of Funchal, Saint John (São João), who, due to the devotion of the Madeirans, is entitled to the famous "Altars de São João", a very special festivity that begins tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday, the 21st of June.

The Altars of St. John (São João) is a festival that always attracts thousands of people to the downtown area of the capital of the Pearl of the Atlantic, but they are mainly concentrated in Praça do Carmo, a place that this year will stage a new event, the traditional Popular Marches.

And the festive programme is diverse, with theatre, philharmonic bands, university music groups, folklore groups, and, as already mentioned, the famous popular marches.

Take this opportunity to experience this popular traditional Madeiran festival and to enjoy the traditional drinks such as liqueurs, sour cherries, and poncha, as well as seasonal delicacies specially prepared by the various local bars and restaurants, which delight all those seeking moments of fun, gastronomy, and lively entertainment.
