• “Giant” catamaran in the port of Funchal

The Port of Funchal received this Friday, the 21st of July, an imposing catamaran, belonging to the North American navy.

This is a different ship, which, due to its size, has attracted the attention of the local population, a vessel that is at the service of the US Navy's Military Maritime Transport Command.

Belonging to the 'Spearhead' class, the 'USNS Trenton' measures 103 in length and 25 in breadth, and will have been carrying out missions to rescue migrants in the Mediterranean. It is normally used to provide support in various operational theaters abroad, and is also prepared for the transport of military personnel and various equipment.

Coming from Spain (Málaga), this high-performance “giant” catamaran is currently making a brief technical stopover on the island of Madeira, and later, it will cross the Atlantic Ocean on its way back to its base, that is, back to the United States of America.

It should be noted that throughout this Friday, the emblematic French ship, ´Belém`, which has been sailing since 1896, should dock in Funchal.
