The Ambassador of the Republic of Ireland in Lisbon visited the island of Madeira and promised to strengthen relations with this Portuguese archipelago.

The Irish emissary in Portugal, Ralph Victory, was officially received by the President of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira on a trip to the island of Madeira to mark a historic date, which relates to the centenary of the first circumnavigation voyage under the Irish flag. The Irish ship behind this adventure, named 'Saoirse' (meaning 'freedom' in Irish), docked in 1923 in the port of Funchal, precisely on its first stopover, a true odyssey that began in Dublin.

During his visit and speaking to the Madeiran media, the diplomat, who has been in office since 2019, revealed his intention to strengthen the relations between Ireland and Madeira, as both communities share a similar insular condition, hence the cooperation that should strengthen bilateral relations.

Ralph Victory also took advantage of his visit to become acquainted with the socio-economic reality of the region, promising to establish connections between Ireland and Madeira in various aspects.
