• Beaches Get A New Flag

The beaches of Madeira Island will now have a flag alerting bathers to the presence of jellyfish.

The phenomenon occurs on Madeira Island's beaches on occasion, but for the sake of public safety and to alert beachgoers to the presence of these jellyfish on the island's various beaches, the Regional Secretary of Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change has decided to implement this additional warning flag. The flag in question features a jellyfish design for easy identification, as the goal is to make it universally recognisable and immediately alert all beachgoers to take precautions against contact with these marine animals, which can leave some burning marks on the skin upon contact.

The Barreirinha bathing complex in Funchal was the "stage" for the formal presentation of this new flag, which will be available throughout the bathing season on all bathing beaches, that is, beaches supervised by lifeguards, professional maritime rescue personnel to whom the public should turn if they see these creatures nearby.
