With the warm weather and the temperature of the sea water already inviting you to bathe, get to know that Madeira Island has 32 beaches with "Gold Quality", an award given by 'Quercus'.
The well-known national environmental association, Quercus - Non Governmental Organization for the Environment (ONGA) of public utility, founded on October 31st, 1985 -, classified and attributed this year its award of "Gold Quality" to a total of 393 beaches in Portugal, 32 of which are in the Madeira Archipelago. Of the 393 awarded beaches, 327 are coastal, 56 inland and 10 are transition beaches.
Refer that the award "Beach with Gold Quality" aims, according to that institution, to distinguish annually the quality of bathing water of Portuguese beaches, "based on official public information made available by the Portuguese Environment Agency" and "based on official public information available, taking into consideration exclusively the analyses made in laboratories of the different Hydrographic Regional Administrations".

Thus, in Madeira Island, 32 beaches were awarded: 4 in Funchal, 4 in Calheta, 1 in Câmara de Lobos, 3 in Ponta do Sol, 4 in Porto Moniz, 7 in Porto Santo, 1 in Ribeira Brava, 3 in Santa Cruz, 1 in Santana, 2 in São Vicente and 2 in Machico.
