Madeira Island Coronavirus Update

Face mask required in certain closed spaces (no longer mandatory on public transportation).

All Covid-19 testing in Madeira has ended, including at airports and ports/marinas.

The state of alert has been extended until September 30th, and the use of a face mask to protect against covid-19 is mandatory in Madeira only in certain closed spaces, such as health establishments, hospitals, residential or reception structures, or home support services for vulnerable populations, the elderly, or people with disabilities, as well as health care homes."
People who have been diagnosed with covid-19 are required to use a protective mask at all times.
Visitors returning from Madeira to England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, or Germany are not required to self-isolate, take COVID-19 tests, or fill out a UK passenger locator form, regardless of vaccination status. Travel update GOV.UK.

8^th July, 2022
The alert period was extended until July 31, and mask use in restricted areas was maintained. 
As of Sunday, May 15th, the use of a face mask to protect against covid-19 will be required in Madeira only in certain closed spaces, such as nursing homes, hospitals, pharmacies, public transportation, and taxis.
On platforms and in covered areas of public transportation, including airports and seaport terminals, all passengers over the age of six must wear a surgical mask or an FFP2.

25^th April
Madeira extends the 'State of Contingency' maintains Covid measures, and mask use in closed areas until mid-May.
Madeira ends the mandatory use of face masks outdoors as of Wednesday, March 16th. Mask use remains mandatory in closed spaces.
The following rules apply in light of the current epidemiological situation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira as of 00:00 on 1 February 2022:
- Citizens are encouraged to use the "S-Alerta Cidadão" App for self-administered alerts and symptom communication.
- COVID-19 testing at airports and ports/marinas has ended, but travellers will be required to present a Completed vaccination Certificate, with three doses of the vaccine; Incomplete vaccination Certificate (1 or 2 doses of vaccine) and a certificate of recovery within 180 days or a certificate of recovery valid for up to 180 days.
- Massive weekly testing of the entire population has come to an end.
The free rapid screening antigen test for covid 19 is now recommended for citizens who have symptoms such as a fever of 38 °C or higher.
- The use of a face mask is recommended in all closed spaces (whenever we are not drinking or eating), as is frequent hand disinfectant, surface hygiene and social distancing (1.5 metres).
- Participating in/attending activities/events - Vaccination Certificate required to participate in or attend public and private sector activities, events including sports, restaurants, gyms, bars and clubs, cultural events, nightlife activities, games, casinos, and other similar activities.
- Supermarkets and large establishments - no testing or vaccination certificates required, including public transportation, pharmacies, clinics, medical services, veterinarians, postal services, social security services, petrol stations and places of worship.
- COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for all citizens aged 5 and up, with 1, 2 or 3 doses based on international recommendations. The fourth dose of the vaccine will be administered to people over the age of 16 who have a severely weakened immune system.

Isolation of Positive Cases
- All positive cases, regardless of age, are isolated for 5 days and then released. On the 6th day, they resume normal activities without a COVID-19 test.
- All contacts with a positive case, regardless of age, are released from isolation.
- Citizens over the age of 18 (inclusive) who have received three doses of the vaccine do not undergo isolation or testing on the fifth day.
- Citizens under the age of 18 who have not been vaccinated or with incomplete vaccination do not require isolation, but must perform a rapid antigen test on the fifth day after contact with a positive case (the test is free).
- Professionals, residents, or visitors with three doses of the vaccine do not isolate, and do not test on the fifth day, in sensitive areas such as education, nursing homes, and healthcare.

Changes to UK international travel rules will take effect on February 11, 2022. All testing requirements will be removed for eligible fully vaccinated arrivals beginning at 4 a.m. on February 11, with only a Passenger Locator Form (PLF) now required. Visitors returning from Madeira to England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, or Germany do not need to self-isolate.
Non-vaccinated visitors must still undergo a screening test for the new coronavirus upon entry and comply with a mandatory 10-day quarantine.

26^th January
Madeira remains in a 'State of Contingency' until 23:59 on the 31st of January.
Masks, tests, and new restrictions apply to everyone. The new measures are detailed in the December 30th update further down the page.

The existing green corridor at the Madeira airport has been extended for vaccinated and recovered travellers from covid-19. To be eligible, travellers must present the vaccination certificate or proof of recovery within the last 90 days, and must be submitted in advance to the app madeirasafe.com before you travel.
According to the most recent data, which was released on January 25th, 2022, Madeira has 1,246 new positive cases, 1 death, and 2,039 recoveries by covid-19 in the last 24 hours. To date, there have been 160 deaths and 10,083 active cases, with 215 imported and 9,868 cases of local transmission.

The Health and Civil Protection introduces the APP “S-Alerta Cidadão”
Citizens can use the new electronic platform to obtain information about the new isolation rules, clarify doubts, and request declarations and certificates related to the disease COVID-19.
The "S-Alerta Cidadão" App is available to all citizens at https://s-alerta.pt/cidadao/

30^th December, 2021
Madeira is in a 'State of Contingency'. Mask, tests, and new restrictions for all.
The President of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, has implemented new restrictions to control the coronavirus outbreak in order to save Christmas and New Year's, which will take effect at 00:00 on Saturday, November 27th.
Rapid antigen tests are free and available to all at participating posts/tents, pharmacies, laboratories, and clinics. Visitors can take a free test at the airport upon arrival. Each visitor is entitled to one free PCR test, which can be taken upon arrival or departure.

New Measures as of November 27th, 2021:
- The use of a face mask is mandatory (including for children from age 10) in all open and closed public spaces, as is hand disinfectant and social distancing (1.5 metres).
- COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for all citizens aged 12 and up, with 1, 2 or 3 doses according to the recommended vaccination schedule.
- Proof of vaccination for all events and massive testing of the entire population (every 7 days).
- Participating in/attending activities/events - (Vaccination Certificate AND Rapid Antigen Test required as November 27th) to participate in or attend public and private sector activities, events including sports, restaurants, hairdressers, gyms, bars and clubs, cultural events, cinemas, nightlife activities, games, casinos, and other similar activities, people must be vaccinated and tested (every 7 days).
- Care home visits will be limited to one per resident, and only those who have been vaccinated and tested will be allowed to visit (rapid antigen test mandatory for all). Employees and residents are required to take weekly tests.
- Supermarkets and large establishments - customers must present Vaccination Certificate OR Rapid Antigen Test (every 7 days), including Public transportation, pharmacies, clinics, medical services, veterinarians, postal services, social security services, petrol stations, places of worship, urgent acts related to justice and other essential services included in the resolution.
- All participants in the Madeiran Christmas tradition of the Childbirth Mass (Misa do Parto) should be vaccinated or tested weekly with a rapid antigen test.
- Circuses, amusement parks, and Christmas activities will be permitted, but all participants will be required to be vaccinated and tested on a weekly basis. (Children under the age of 12 will only need to be tested.)
- Market Night, Saint Silvestre's Night and New Year's Eve - (Both the Vaccination Certificate and the Rapid Antigen Test must be presented.)
- Christmas dinners - massive weekly testing and vaccinations will be required.
- Central Square (Placa Central) will have controlled access.

For this year's Market Night, there will be no food or beverage stalls in the market's surrounding areas, only fruit and vegetable stands until 2 a.m.
In the last 24 hours, Madeira has recorded 310 new positive cases and 153 new recoveries by covid-19. To date, there have been 132 deaths and 2494 active cases, with 134 imported and 2360 cases of local transmission.

16^th December, 2021
Masks are mandatory in Madeira starting at the age of ten until March 1, 2022. Fines will be imposed for failure to comply.
The first case of the novel Omicron variant has been identified in Madeira on December 16th; it was discovered in an English citizen who had recently arrived in the Region and is being isolated at a hotel.
Madeira has been named the World's Leading Island Destination for 2021.
Vaccinations against COVID-19 for children ages 5 to 11 in Madeira began on Thursday, December 14.
According to the most recent data, released by the regional health officials on Thursday the 16th, Madeira registers 152 new positive cases, 2 deaths, and 57 recoveries by covid-19 in the last 24 hours. To date there are 15,507 confirmed cases, 122 deaths and 14,304 recoveries, thus making a total of 1,081 active cases, of which 53 are imported and 1,028 are cases of local transmission.

25^th November
Mainland Portugal returns to a "state of calamity" on December 1st, 2021, until 23:59 on March 20, 2022, with new Pandemic Control Measures in place (These measures do not apply to Madeira).

15^th November
Madeira's curfew is lifted and nightclubs reopen on Friday, October 15, 2021.
Mask use remains mandatory in closed spaces.
Masks are recommended. Disinfectants and social distancing rules will continue to be enforced.
Nightlife venues and clubs – reopen with no restrictions (Vaccination certificate required).
All Industrial, Commercial, and Service Activities – will remain in operation with no restrictions on capacity or operating hours (Provided that the health rules issued by the competent health authorities are followed).
Restaurants/Bars/Similar Establishments – resume their normal services without restrictions (Provided that the health rules issued by the competent health authorities are followed).
Sports Activities – resume their normal services without restrictions.
Care home visits – are now permitted without restriction, as long as the health rules issued by the appropriate health authorities are followed (rapid test for visitors remains mandatory).
In the last 24 hours, Madeira has recorded 36 new positive cases and 38 new recoveries by covid-19.

11^th October
Madeira's restrictions have been extended until October 31st, 2021.
Most of the restrictions on mainland Portugal will be lifted on October 1st, and the country will be placed on alert. Madeira's restrictions will be reviewed following the flower festival. (Flower Festival Video 2021)

1^st October, 2021
Don't forget the famous and vibrant Flower Festival, which takes place between the 1st and 24th of October, with the theme "Madeira, Garden of Hope," "Wall of Hope," the children's parade on October 2nd, and allegoric parade on October 3rd. Other activities included in this event are the Regional Flavours Market and Flower Exhibition, as well as floral carpets and decorations along Avenida Arriaga, including Flower Concerts from October 14th to 17th, and more.
Madeira Island continues on the UK "green watchlist". Self-isolation is not required for visitors returning from Madeira to England, Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland, however proof of a negative PCR test will be required upon arrival. Travel corridors update GOV.UK.
Madeira has been reclassified as a "high incidence area" by Germany since July 7, 2021, after previously being classified as a " area of variant concern". Non-vaccinated visitors traveling between Madeira and Germany must still undergo a screening test for the new coronavirus upon entry and comply with a mandatory 10-day quarantine (fully vaccinated passengers will not be required to quarantine).

20^th September
Portugal ends mandatory use of face masks outdoors as of this Monday, September 12th, becoming optional and recommended in some situations, such as crowds and by vulnerable people. (Those infected with the coronavirus or who have had contacts at risk, as well as those who are more vulnerable, should continue to wear masks.) 
Madeira has adopted a regional recommendation to continue wearing the mask outdoors under any circumstances in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

25^th August
The state of calamity in Madeira will be renewed, and the curfew will be extended by one hour.
The confinement period in Madeira and Porto Santo continues, with the mandatory curfew remaining in effect between 01.00 and 05:00 the following morning, including weekends. (For more information on the new measures, see the June 14th update.)
In Madeira, there have been 43 new positive cases and 34 new recoveries of covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

6^th July
Germany has reclassified Madeira as a "high incidence area" after previously classifying it as a "area of variant concern".
As of Wednesday, July 7, 2021, non-vaccinated passengers traveling between Madeira and Germany must still undergo a screening test for the new coronavirus upon entry and comply with a mandatory 10-day quarantine (fully vaccinated passengers will not be required to quarantine).

As of July 5, 2021, Madeira has reported 9 new positive cases and 14 new recoveries of covid-19.

29^th June
Germany places Madeira on the risk list; passengers traveling between Madeira and Germany are required to perform a screening test for the new coronavirus upon entry and comply with a mandatory two-week quarantine beginning Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at 0:00.

Madeira Island will be placed on the UK "green watchlist" at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, June 30.

24^th June
Madeira is one of 16 destinations added to the UK government's quarantine-free travel "green list" as of 4 a.m. on June 30. Holidaymakers returning from Madeira to England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are not required to self-isolate. Travel corridors update GOV.UK.

Next week, many flights are scheduled from the UK to Madeira, primarily operated by Jet 2 and Easyjet, but the number of flights is expected to rapidly increase.

Madeira Regional Government confirms mandatory PCR testing for another month upon arrival at the Region's airports.

According to the most recent data, Madeira registers 3 new positive cases and 8 new recoveries by covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

14^th June
The President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, has announced a new relaxation of the restrictive measures in place to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, which will go into effect on June 15th at 00:00.

The mandatory curfew has been extended for another hour, from 01:00 to 05:00.

Measures as of 15th June 2021:
Circulation on Public Roads – prohibited between 01.00 and 05:00 the following day, including weekends.
Restaurants/Bars/Similar Establishments – must close at 00:00, capacity until 2/3. Interior seating for up to six people and exterior seating for up to ten people. (forbidden to drink at the counter or standing, inside or on the terraces).
All Industrial, Commercial, and Service Activities – close at 00.00, with capacity until 2/3.
Games establishments and Casinos, Bingo or similar – close at 00:00, with capacity until 2/3.
Weddings/Christenings/Cultural events/Other Festivities – capacity up to 2/3 interior or exterior (Mandatory rapid test for events with more than 100 people, no age limit).
Sports Activities – As of 0:00 on June 15, general public access to sports infrastructure is permitted for training and events/sporting competitions, with space capacity of up to 50%, the use of a mask, disinfectant and social distancing remaining.
Care home visits – extended up to one hour with two visits per week, but the rapid test for visitors remains mandatory. Residents will be allowed to leave these structures for medical reasons or family visits, as long as they present a negative test upon their return.
Madeira's traditional summer festivities are still prohibited.
Trips between Madeira and Porto Santo – Green corridor inter-island connections, arrival and departure controls will be maintained for those individuals who have been vaccinated, tested, and recovered for up to 180 days.
Starting June 21, only a rapid negative test, which can be done up to 48 hours before the journey, will be required to travel between the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo.
Self-tests will not be accepted.
The use of a mask, disinfectant, and social distancing rules will remain mandatory.

In the last 24 hours Madeira registers 8 new positive cases and 7 new recoveries by covid-19. To date there are 9539 confirmed cases, 72 deaths and 9396 recoveries, thus making a total of 71 active cases, of which 19 are imported and 52 are cases of local transmission.

12^th June
Madeira Island remains on the UK's amber list, and holidaymakers returning to England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland from Madeira will be required to quarantine at home for 10 days as part of COVID-19 restrictions, according to the guidelines outlined in the amber list.

Germany has removed Madeira from the list of Covid-19 risk areas, and visitors are no longer subject to quarantine upon their return to the country as of Sunday, June 13, 2021, at 0:00.

According to the president of the Regional Government, the mandatory curfew in Madeira and Porto Santo should be extended by one hour.
Only next Monday, June 14th, will the adjustment to the new covid measures be made public.

Madeira continues in a state of calamity with the curfew in effect between 00.00 and 05:00 the following morning, including weekends.

Circulation on Public Roads – prohibited between 00.00 and 05:00 the following day, including weekends.
All Industrial, Commercial and Service Activities – close at 22.00 (With the exception of pharmacies, medical and veterinary clinics, fuel stations and home delivery of medical gas and oxygen).
Restaurants/Bars and Similar Establishments – must close at 23.00, capacity up to 50%, respect social distancing, five people per table inside and outside (forbidden to drink at the counter or standing, inside or on the terraces).
Weddings/Christenings and other Festivities – space capacity up to 50%, safety distance, maximum capacity six people per table inside and outside (not including children under the age of 12). All respecting the closing times of commercial establishments at 22.00 and curfew at 23.00.
Supermarkets & Commercial Stores – capacity up to 50% and safety precautions.
Gymnasiums – capacity up to 50%, group classes allowed inside up to five people.
Spaces of Worship – people must comply with rules of social distancing, limiting the capacity to one third (avoid socializing in the churchyard or common space).
The regional public administration – return to their normal operating hours from the 3rd of May.
Sports Activities – allowed the practice of leisure and competitive sports (considered low risk).
Tourist Entertainment Companies – may carry up to 100% of their capacity if all occupants have been vaccinated or recovered from Covid-19.
Beaches, bathing complexes and playgrounds – reopen during the bathing season at reduced capacity, maintaining its general safety rules, social distancing and the hygiene of spaces (indoor showers and changing rooms remain closed).
Day Centres, Social and Community Centers reopen as of June 1, 2021.

For just 20 euros, non-residents can take a rapid Covid-19 test at any of the tents set up in the centre of Funchal.

4^th June
Portugal has been taken off the UK's green list (including Madeira and Azores) and will be moved to the amber list as of 4 am on Tuesday, 8 June announced by Transport Minister Grant Shapps. The decision was made as a result of an increase of Corona cases and a possible new mutation of the Delta (Indian) variant detected in Portugal. Travel corridors update GOV.UK.

27^th May
Madeira Island remains on the UK's travel corridor “green list”. Travellers returning to England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland from Madeira don’t need to self-isolate, although proof of a negative PCR test will be required on their return. The island continues to be a safe destination to visit and has one of the lowest infection rates in Europe.
New changes to Covid-19 measures have been confirmed Bars/Restaurants will be able to stay open until 23:00 and the curfew hours have been extended to 00:00-05:00.

17^th May
As of today, the borders between Portugal, Europe and the United Kingdom reopen and holidaymakers return seeking sun and adventure.
Today the first tourists have arrived in Porto Santo and Madeira Island in joy after months of confinement.
UK travellers get the green light to travel to Madeira and be exempt from quarantine, although proof of a negative PCR test will be required on their return.
New changes to Covid-19 measures will be decided on Thursday. However, the Government has mentioned that it is almost certain that as of Friday restaurants will be able to stay open until 23:00 and the curfew postponed to 00:00-05:00.
Madeira registers 9 new positive cases and 21 new recoveries by covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

7^th May
Good news for international travellers. The UK government has just confirmed Portugal, including Madeira and Azores, as one of the 12 countries to be moved back to the green list as of 4 am, Monday 17 May.
Holidaymakers returning to England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland from Madeira Island don’t need to self-isolate although COVID-19 tests will be required before and after travel.
The Region continues its vaccination plan, and this time the professionals serving in the tourism sector and people with rare diseases. This past Saturday 100,000 was the number of vaccines administered against covid-19 in Madeira.
Madeira is currently in a state of calamity for a period of 15 days, with the mandatory curfew in effect between 23.00 and 05:00 the following morning, including weekends.
Madeira registers 15 new positive cases and 38 new recoveries by covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

26^th April
The President of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, has announced an easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
Currently, the mandatory curfew is in effect weekdays between 19:00 and 05:00 the following day and Weekends between 18:00 and 05:00 the following day (Saturdays and Sundays and public holidays).
Commercial activities, restaurants, bars and similar establishments closes at 18:00 on weekdays and at 17:00 on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays and public holidays).

From 00.00 on the 27th April the following measures come into force:
Conferences, shows and cultural events can be held at a reduced capacity up to 50% of the space, always maintaining social distancing.
Care home visits extended up to one hour with two visits per week.
Residents, students and emigrants from Madeira and Porto Santo who enter the region by air or sea must go through a double-testing procedure on arrival and on the 5th day.
From 00.00 on the 2nd May (Sunday) the mandatory curfew will take effect between 23.00 and 05:00 the following day, including weekends.
Circulation on public roads is prohibited between 23.00 and 05:00 the following day, including weekends.
All commercial activities, restaurants, bars and similar establishments must close at 22.00 (Capacity up to 50% and safety precautions).
The regional public administration returns to their normal operating hours from the 3rd of May.

In the last 24 hours Madeira registers 16 new positive cases and 26 new recoveries by covid-19. To date there are 8895 confirmed cases, 71 deaths and 8569 recoveries, thus making a total of 264 active cases, of which 18 are imported and 246 are cases of local transmission.

16^th April
Madeira and Porto Santo confinement period continues until April 26th, with the curfew remaining in force:
Circulation on public roads is prohibited - Weekdays between 19:00 and 05:00 the following day and Weekends between 18:00 and 05:00 the following day (Saturdays and Sundays and public holidays).
Mandatory use of a mask in all public spaces, including children from the age of 6.
Industrial, commercial and service activities will remain in operation with the necessary conditions, but must close at 18:00 on weekdays and close at 17:00 on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays and public holidays).
Restaurants, Bars and similar establishments must close at 18:00 on weekdays (from Monday to Friday) and close at 17:00 on weekends (Saturdays, Sundays and holidays). Restaurants allowed to operate until 22h, exclusively for the preparation of meals, only for home delivery. (Only professionals associated with the delivery of meals can circulate after curfew, until 22h, with the proper identification).

13^th April
The total reopening and the Flower Festival in October 2021 after about 70% of the population has been vaccinated, announced Miguel Albuquerque at the presentation of the new 'Madeira brand'.
The plan is to review restrictions and take action to ease the curfew in the next two weeks after all students are tested and all teachers vaccinated.
Students are back to school and all will be backed by a functioning covid-19 rapid testing programme.

8^th April
Students are back to school after the Easter period, Secondary Education from April 8 and the 3rd cycle from April 12 all will be backed by a functioning covid-19 rapid testing programme.
The Regional Government plans to review some restrictions by the end of the month once all teachers are vaccinated and all students tested.
Based on the latest data released today, Madeira registers 24 new positive cases of covid-19 and 29 new recoveries in the last 24 hours.

31^st March
According to data released on Wednesday, 31st March, Madeira registers 22 new positive cases and 37 recoveries by covid-19 in the last 24 hours. To date there are 8378 confirmed cases, 71 deaths and 7896 recoveries, thus making a total of 411 active cases, of which 20 are imported and 391 are cases of local transmission.

30^th March
Care home visits permitted as of March 30th.
As of today, Madeira registers 24 new positive cases and 76 recoveries by covid-19 in the last 24 hours. To date there are 8356 confirmed cases, 71 deaths and 7859 recoveries, thus making a total of 426 active cases, of which 19 are imported and 407 are cases of local transmission.

22^nd March
Madeira removed from England's COVID-19 travel red list at 4 am on Friday, 19 March 2021. Travellers returning to England from Madeira Island will be able to quarantine at home, rather than in a hotel. Travel corridors update GOV.UK
Covid-19 lockdown measures begin to ease across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and should will come to an end on 31 March. The ban on Foreign travel will continue until at least 17 May.
Madeira remains on the risk list for Germany, passengers travelling between Madeira and Germany are asked to perform a screening test for the new coronavirus when entering the country.

15^th March

The National lockdown rules are still in place in England, foreign travel is banned apart from for exceptional reasons. The 17th May could be the earliest date people from England can travel abroad for holidays.
Madeira remains on the risk list for Germany, passengers travelling between Madeira and Germany are asked to perform a screening test for the new coronavirus when entering the country.
Portugal extended a ban on commercial or private flights between mainland Portugal and the UK until 31 March.

According to data, released on Tuesday by the regional health authorities, Madeira registers 23 new positive cases and 58 recoveries by covid-19 in the last 24 hours. To date there are 7901 confirmed cases, 67 deaths and 7175 recoveries, thus making a total of 659 active cases, of which 17 are imported and 642 are cases of local transmission.

15^th February
Between today and Friday the regional government has implemented more restrictive measures in order to control the coronavirus outbreak over the Carnival period in Madeira and Porto Santo.
Mandatory curfew between 18:00 and 05:00 and closing at 17:00 for industrial, commercial and service activities. (For more details, see the January 12th update below).
According to the most recent data, Madeira registers 60 new positive cases and 58 recoveries by covid-19 in the last 24 hours. To date there are 6398 confirmed cases, 62 deaths and 4704 recoveries, thus making a total of 1632 active cases, of which 43 are imported and 1589 are cases of local transmission. Madeira Island removed from travel corridors exemption list as of 4am Friday 15th January.
From 4am on 18th January 2021, Coronavirus testing must be done before travelling to England from abroad. If you do not provide proof of a negative test result, you will not be able to board and may be fined £ 500 on arrival in England.

Travel between Portugal and UK is prohibited, including Madeira as of 4am 15th January Corridor Closed. British, Irish and third country nationals with residence rights in the UK are able to enter but are required to self-isolate for 10 days on arrival.
Based on the latest data released, Madeira registers 111 new positive cases of covid-19, 38 new recoveries and 1 more death in the last 24 hours.

12^th January
President of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque has implemented new measures in order to control the coronavirus outbreak, which come into effect as of 00:00 on Wednesday 13th of January until the end of the month 31st of January.
The new restrictive measures are:
Circulation weekdays on public roads is prohibited between 19:00 and 05:00 the following day.
Circulation weekends on public roads is prohibited between 18:00 and 05:00 the following day (Saturdays and Sundays and public holidays).
Industrial, commercial and service activities will remain in operation with the necessary conditions, but must close at 18:00 on weekdays and close at 17:00 on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays and public holidays).
Restaurants, Bars and similar establishments must close at 18:00 on weekdays (from Monday to Friday) and close at 17:00 on weekends (Saturdays, Sundays and holidays). Restaurants during weekdays (from Monday to Friday) can operate until 22h, exclusively for the preparation of meals, for Take-away and home delivery. (Only professionals associated with the delivery of meals can circulate after curfew, until 22h, with the proper identification). With the exception of pharmacies, medical and veterinary clinics, fuel stations and home delivery of medical gas and oxygen.
Schools suspended until 31 January for students in the 3rd Cycle and Secondary Education.
All other levels of education: Nursery / Kindergartens / Pre-school / 1st Cycle, 2nd Cycle, Professional and Special Education maintain their activities in school.
Sports activities in the clubs and sports infrastructures in all municipalities in the region are suspended until 31 January, with the exception of the senior teams of the collective modalities participating in regular national competitions.
Regional public administration teleworking is to continue until 31st January.
Games establishments and Casinos, Bingo or similar close at 17:00 on the weekends from 16 and 17/23 and 24 and 30 and 31 of January.

8^th January
Portugal State of Emergency extended until January 15.
The Regional Government of Madeira imposes curfew at 18:00 on the next two weekends (9-10 and 16-17 January).
For the next two weekends all commercial establishments, cafes, bars, restaurants and spaces of worship close at 17:00. Take-away ’and home deliveries close 18:00.
In addition, all shops, including department stores and supermarkets, close 5 pm and open 8 am”, with the exception of pharmacies, clinics and fuel stations.

According to data released on Thursday by the Regional health authorities, Madeira registers 77 confirmed cases, 2 deaths and 39 recoveries, thus making a total of 1027 active cases, of which 181 are imported and 846 are cases of local transmission.

Germany puts Madeira on the risk list, passengers travelling between Madeira and Germany are asked to perform a screening test for the new coronavirus when entering the country.

The President of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque issues new measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus increase. As of 00:00h Tuesday 5th of January, tighter measures are in place for all of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Circulation on public roads is prohibited between 11 pm and 5 am, with the exception of Health professionals, security forces, civil protection agents, military personnel, inspectors, urgent medical-veterinary assistance, short-term and pet-friendly walks, airport passengers, public transportation, taxis, and TVDE (Uber). Mandatory use of a mask in all public spaces.
Care Home visits are suspended until January 15th. The vaccination plan for its professionals and home residents is already taking place.
The regional public administration will reduce work to a minimum and opting if possible, for teleworking, until January 15th.
Schools in Funchal, Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava and Porto Santo suspended until January 10, 2021.
Bars, Restaurants and take-away close at 10:30 pm. It is forbidden the gatherings of more than 5 people (except family).
It is forbidden celebrations and other events that involve gatherings of more than 5 people (except family) including in areas of restoration of shopping centres and restaurants, cafes, and bakeries 300 m from schools.
Spaces of Worship, people must comply with social distancing rules, limiting the capacity to one third. After service, people should return home and avoid gatherings in the churchyard or surrounding areas.

Trips between Madeira and Porto Santo: Temperature checks and the use of mask are mandatory on departure and arrival for all passengers, either by air or sea. Passengers must present a negative laboratory test carried out within 72 hours or take a test upon arrival and must remain in isolation at their home or hotel until a negative result is obtained. Porto Santo residents who travel to Funchal for less than five days undergo a test five days after their return. Non-residents who enter Porto Santo and stay up to seven days should only present a negative test carried out in the last 72 hours on arrival, but if they stay more than seven days, they must also repeat it between the fifth and seventh days.
Inspection will also be reinforced, in order to comply with the rules throughout the Region.

Portugal imposes new restrictions on flights from the United Kingdom (UK) as of 00:00 Monday 21st of December 2020, after a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 was identified in that country.
Until further notice only Portuguese nationals and foreign citizens with legal residency in Portugal are allowed to enter Portugal, who must still bring a negative laboratory test.
Citizens who do not have proof of the negative test result will be redirected to perform the test at the airport upon arrival and will have to remain in isolation, under the terms defined by health authorities.

3^rd December
Nationwide lockdown in England has been lifted and people are once again allowed to go on holiday. Airlines have started to resume flights to Madeira Island and hotels are already beginning to feel an increase in reservations.
Madeira continues to be on the air corridor with the UK, so travellers returning to England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Germany don’t need to self-isolate. The island remains the safest destination to visit this Christmas with the lowest covid-19 infection rate in Europe.

24^th November
England is drastically reducing its quarantine period for people arriving from most destinations in a move that will potentially throw open the doors for British people wanting to take foreign vacations. As of December 15, travellers arriving into England will have to self-isolate just five days instead of the current 14 under a new testing strategy announced by the UK government.
Under the new rules, all international arrivals from destinations absent from England's travel corridor list will have the option to take a Covid-19 test after being in quarantine for the shorter period.
Those who receive a negative result will be permitted to refrain from self-isolating, but must continue to follow domestic Covid-19 rules. The "test and release" scheme requires passengers arriving in England by plane, ferry or train to book and pay for the test themselves. It's unclear whether the scheme will eventually cover the rest of the UK.
Madeira Island has an air corridor with the UK so no quarantine is required when you return home, Madeira has Europe’s lowest covid-19 infection rate.

Madeira registers 9 new positive cases, 10 recoveries and 1 more death by covid-19 in the last 24 hours. To date there are 540 confirmed cases, 2 deaths and 342 recoveries, thus making a total of 196 active cases, of which 144 are imported and 52 are cases of local transmission.

5^th November
As Europe continues to see rising cases of coronavirus infections, lockdown for England begins on Thursday from 5 November to 2 December 2020. Travelling within the UK and overseas will not be allowed, except for work, care or for education. UK nationals and residents who are abroad can return home and Travellers returning to England from Madeira Island do not need to self-isolate. Different rules apply to Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Germany, however Travellers returning home from Madeira Island do not need to self-isolate. Madeira is still the safest place to visit and has one of the lowest infection rates in Europe.

4^th November
The President of the Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque announces at a press conference new prevention and care measures to contain second wave of pandemic, which will take effect Friday, November 6, 2020, at 00:00 for a period of 30 days.

The new prevention and care measures are:

Mandatory use of a mask in all public spaces, including children from the age of 6.

Bars and similar establishments must be closed until midnight.
Inspection by PSP, GNR, ARAE will be reinforced, as well as the implementation of protective measures: Use of the mask, alcohol-based hand disinfectant, social distancing and banning gatherings of more than 5 people (except family). Inspection will also be reinforced in the exterior, in order to comply with the rules.

Night Clubs and all regional competitions/modalities are suspended for a period of 30 days.

Restaurants and similar establishments must be closed until 11 pm.
Inspection will also be reinforced, in order to comply with social distancing rules, use of the mask and hygiene. It is forbidden the gatherings of more than 5 people (except family).

Gymnasiums, Hairdressers, Casino, Maritime Tourist Activities and Playgrounds will be required to reduce their capacity to 50%.

Inspection on leaving schools will be reinforced to avoid gatherings of more than 5 people, by students, mandatory use of the mask, in young people over the age of 6.

Control measures have also been reinforced in the Public Administration spaces, Citizen's Shop (Loja do Cidadão) and other public service spaces.

November 1st Madeira announces its first death due to COVID-19, a 97-year-old woman with major health issues who was hospitalized at the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça since 27th of October. To date there are 455 confirmed cases, 283 people have recovered, thus making a total of 172 active cases, of which 147 are imported and 25 are cases of local transmission.

Madeira Island has had no deaths from Covid19 and has so far Europes lowest infection rate. Masks have to be worn in shopping centre, public transport etc, but not out in the open air or on the streets as previously reported.

Quarantine travel rules between England and Portugal has been lifted. As of 4am on 22nd of August, Portugal will be added to UK's safe travel list and self-isolation no longer required.

23^rd July
No quarantine for UK tourists when they return from Madeira.

Quarantine-free travel between England and Portugal is likely to be confirmed within days as the government prepares to update its “air bridge” policy.

It is understood that Portugal, one of the most popular countries for British holidaymakers, will be added to the list of 59 countries where travel is possible without the need to isolate on return.

The move follows powerful lobbying from the Portuguese government, which was angered by the “absurd” decision to leave the country off the original list of Covid-safe travel corridors published by Westminster at the start of this month.

Portugal, which welcomed 2.1 million UK tourists last year, has had a spike in coronavirus cases around the capital Lisbon over the past month although rates are much lower in tourist hotspots such as the Algarve and the islands of the Azores and Madeira. The Foreign Office has already lifted its advice against non-essential travel to the Azores and Madeira for UK citizens.

Grant Shapps, the transport secretary, is due to update government policy on quarantine-free “travel corridors” by Monday. Other countries such as the Maldives, which opened up to international travellers last week for the first time since the pandemic began, may also be included.

It is also thought that money could be released to test those arriving into the UK. Mr Shapps said this month that he was “actively working” with Heathrow and other airports on the plan.

However, No 10 moved to scotch rumours that quarantine restrictions would be added to arrivals from Spain after a rise in cases. Spain, the most popular country for British holidaymakers, has reported almost 9,000 new cases in the past week, with particular concern around the regions of Catalonia and Aragon.

It is unlikely that quarantine policies in relation to the country will be changed immediately. A government spokesman said: “Spain is currently on a list of exemptions. We keep the data for all countries and territories under constant review. Travel advice can be changed rapidly to help stop the spread of the disease.”

3^rd July
British holidaymakers have been given the green light to travel to Madeira Island and be exempt from quarantine, the good news was announced today the 3rd of July by the British Foreign Office. The new travel rule will be inforce from July 10 and give a welcome boost to the thousands of British tourists that are regular visitors to the always Summer Island.
Madeira has had no deaths from the coronavirus covid-19 and one of the lowest infection rates recorded in Europe.

A TAP flight to Madeira from the continent had all the passengers tested for the virus and one passenger tested positive, all the passengers and crew are now in quarantine for 14 days. There are no new cases now for 26 days within the population on the island of Madeira.

Madeira and Porto Santo will reopen for Tourism on 1st of July, date on which the mandatory quarantine is lifted.

31^st May
Madeira records no new COVID-19 cases in 26 days and no deaths. Cumulative total of confirmed cases remains at 90, with 76 recovered cases, bringing the total number of 14 active cases of infection.

From June 1, 2020 until June 30, 2020 - In order to avoid mandatory quarantine for 14 days, all travellers entering Madeira and Porto Santo must present a PCR test, issued no more than 72 hours prior to their travel date, confirming that they do not have COVID-19.

Madeira nightlife venues, clubs and bars with terraces and outdoor spaces reopen from Monday, June 1st, at 50% capacity with strict safety precautions. Clubs can only be open until 2 am.

Most shopping centres and shops reopen to the public, restaurants and bars can reopen from the 18th of May.

International tourist travel should begin around the end of June, and many hotels and resorts hope to open in July.

The beaches, parks, gardens are now open to the public and all road travel restrictions have been lifted.

14^th May
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Madeira has had a total of 90 positive cases of COVID-19 and 59 recovered cases, bringing the total number of 31 active cases of infection in the Region. NO DEATHS from the Covid-19 virus have been recorded.

13^th May
It’s the seventh straight day without new confirmed cases of the disease in Madeira, with the total number remaining at 90. Meanwhile, 55 people have been cured and the total number of active cases stands at 35. There were no deaths reported.

12^th May
For the sixth consecutive day, there are no positive cases of covid-19 and NO DEATHS recorded. The total number of positive cases remains at 90, the recovered increased to 55, since there was two new recoveries, making a total of 35 active cases of infection.

11^th May
As of today, there are No New cases of the virus and no deaths recorded. The total of positive cases remains at 90, with 53 people recovered, making a total of 37 active cases of infection.

10^th May
For the fourth day in a row, no coronavirus cases were confirmed in Madeira, maintaining the number of 90 positive cases, 53 people have recovered, thus making a total of 37 active cases of infection. No deaths due to COVID-19 infection were recorded.

8^th May
There are no new cases of coronavirus for the second consecutive day and no deaths recorded in Madeira. The total number of positive cases remains at 90 and the number of recovered patients has increased to 52, since the hospitalized patient is now recovered, making a total of 38 active cases of infection.

Porto Santo beach reopens under strict rules from Sunday, May 10th.
The social distancing between bathers is mandatory and group gatherings is prohibited. Facilities, bars, cafes and restaurants along the beach will remain closed. The mandatory quarantine for Porto Santo will be lifted on the 18th of May for all residents of the archipelago.

The Madeira Private Hospital and Madeira Medical Centre will resume their normal services starting Monday, May 11th. Entry will be allowed after a questionnaire and Temperature screening, mask and hand disinfectant are mandatory. Safety distance is also signalled in all services areas.
MMC will resume all its services: clinical analysis, permanent care (adults), face-to-face consultations, imaging exams, cardiology, gastroenterology and nursing care, from Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 9 pm, and Saturdays from 7:30 am to 2 pm.
As for HPM, all exams and face-to-face consultations for adults and children will be activated, as well as permanent paediatric care, from 9 am to 12 am.

As of May 11th, a series of individual sports will be allowed, while always maintaining social distancing, such as sport and recreational fishing, surfing, bodyboard, canoeing, tennis, motor racing, etc. Public and Forest spaces, recommended walking routes and some public gardens, such as Quinta do Santo da Serra, Quinta Magnolia, Jardim das Madalenas, Jardim do Amparo e Jardim de Santa Luzia will also reopen on May 11th. Maintaining all Facilities, bars, cafes and restaurants closed.

Gyms will resume limited activity starting Tuesday, May 12th.
Group classes can only take place outdoors at the condition to respect social distancing. Spaces are limited to one third of its capacity, showers and changing rooms remained closed. Members are only allowed to stay inside the gym for one hour, each member will be required to clean and sanitize equipment after each use.

Museums, libraries, galleries, cultural centres and archives reopens Thursday, May 14th, with mandatory use of masks, hand disinfectant for all employees and visitors. Routine cleaning and disinfecting of regularly touched surfaces must be frequent and recorded.

Beaches, bathing complexes and sea access reopens Friday, May 15th, if the pandemic situation continues to evolve favorably. More information in regards to safety rules, social distancing and hygiene will be announced next Thursday.

Restaurants, bars, cafes and terraces may reopen on Monday, May 18th. The operating conditions will be announced at the end of next week.

7^th May
There are no positive cases of covid-19 and NO DEATHS recorded in the last 24 hours. The total number of positive cases remains at 90, the recovered increased to 51, since there was one new recovery, making a total of 39 active cases of infection.

6^th May
Madeira registers four new cases of infection in the last 24 hours, raising the number to 90 positive cases, 50 people have recovered, thus making a total of 40 active cases of COVID-19. At the moment, 5 suspected cases await laboratory results and NO deaths have been recorded.

5^th May
For the eleventh consecutive day, there are no positive cases of covid-19 and NO DEATHS were recorded.The total number of positive cases remains at 86, the recovered increased to 50, since there was two new recoveries, making a total of 36 active cases of infection and 85 suspected cases awaiting laboratory results.

Madeira has reached it's tenth consecutive day without any new cases of COVID-19, maintaining the number of 86 positive cases, 48 people have recovered, thus making a total of 38 active cases of infection. At the moment, 71 suspected cases await laboratory results. No deaths have been recorded.

The region reopens some economic activities, such as shops, hair salons, barbers, and shopping centres, with tight restrictions established by the Regional Government.
The reopening immediately imposes the obligation for both businesses and individuals to social distancing regulations, the use of masks in all closed spaces, in public transport and temperature screening of workers twice a day.
Clear safety rules regarding the hygiene of employees, customers, disinfection of spaces and trying on or exchange of clothes, footwear, accessories and jewellery are prohibited.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Porto Santo Airports will continue to operate a reduced number of two weekly flights and a maximum of 100 passengers allowed to disembark per week, maintaining the mandatory14-day quarantine for all.
The ports and marinas of the archipelago will remain closed.

3^rd May
For the ninth consecutive day, there are no positive cases of covid-19, announced this Sunday by the vice president of IASaúde. The total number of positive cases remains at 86, the recovered increased to 48, since there was one new recovery, making a total of 38 active cases of infection and 69 suspected cases awaiting laboratory results. No deaths were recorded.
If the evolution continues to be positive, Madeira will be one of the first regions in the world to receive tourists safely, guarantees Pedro Ramos, the Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection.

2^nd May
For the eighth day in a row, no coronavirus cases were confirmed in Madeira, maintaining the number of 86 positive cases, 47 people have recovered, thus making a total of 39 active cases of infection. At the moment, 33 suspected cases await laboratory results. No deaths due to COVID-19 infection were recorded. Sanitary fence in Câmara de Lobos will be lifted at 00:00 on Sunday.

1^st May
No New COVID-19 cases for the seventh day in a row, maintaining the number of 86 positive cases, there are 4 more new recoveries, thus making a total of 39 active cases of infection. 33 people await laboratory results. No deaths have been recorded. 

30^thApril
No New cases of COVID-19 for the sixth consecutive days and NO DEATHS recorded in Madeira Island. The total number of positive cases remains at 86, with 43 patients having recovered. The number of active cases is down to 43. 176 cases await laboratory results.

The emergency state ends and the state of calamity begins in Madeira from 00:00 on Sunday night, for a period of 15 days.
The president of the Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque declares the situation of calamity and announced the reopening of some economic activities, hairdressers (appointment only), services and shopping centres.
The strict measures that come into force are:
- The use of a mask will be mandatory in all commercial spaces where there is a greater concentration of people, such as public transport, shopping centres, schools.
- Workers must take temperature twice a day and maintain social distance.
- All establishments must operate at one third of the capacity.
- Visits to care homes are not allowed.
- Restaurants will continue to operate in take-away.
- Beaches remain 'closed'.
- The reopening of economic activities will be evaluated weekly.

There are No New cases for fifth consecutive day, maintaining the number of 86 positive cases. The total number of recovered patients remains at 43. Of the 43 active cases, one patient was admitted to the isolation unit dedicated to covid-19 at the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, due to the need of additional medical treatment. 70 cases await laboratory results. No deaths from COVID-19 infection were recorded in Madeira.

No New COVID-19 cases for fourth consecutive day, maintaining the number of 86 positive cases, there are 8 more new recoveries, thus making a total of 43 active cases of infection. The hospitalized patient who was in the isolation unit dedicated to covid-19 is now recovered. 18 people waiting for results. No deaths have been recorded.

As of today there are no positive cases for third consecutive day, maintaining the number of 86 positive cases, 1 new recovery, thus making a total of 51 active cases of infection. No deaths from the Covid-19 virus have been recorded. 58 people waiting for results.

26^thApril
There are no positive cases for second consecutive day. There are 3 more cases of recovery, bringing a total number of 52 active cases of infection. 16 cases await laboratory results. No deaths from COVID-19 infection were recorded in Madeira.

25^thApril
As of today there are no new positive cases reported, maintaining the number of 86 positive cases. There are 10 new cases of recovery, bringing a total number of 55 active cases of infection. No deaths have been recorded. 36 suspected cases await laboratory results.

24^thApril
As of today there is one new case of infection, raising the number to 86 positive cases of COVID-19. No deaths have been recorded. As for the two patients who were hospitalized, one remains the isolation unit dedicated to covid-19 and the patient in intensive care unit is now recovered. 54 people await laboratory results.

23^rd April
As of today there are no positive cases for third consecutive day, maintaining the number of 85 positive cases, 20 people have recovered, thus making a total of 65 active cases of infection. 80 people waiting for results. No deaths due to COVID-19 infection were recorded in Madeira.

22^ndApril
As of today there are no positive cases for second consecutive day. There are 7 more cases of recovery, bringing a total number of 65 active cases of infection. No deaths have been recorded. 72 suspected cases await laboratory results.

21^stApril
As of today there are no positive cases in the last 24 hours, maintaining the number of infected patients at 85. No deaths have been recorded. 67 suspected cases await laboratory results. In connection with the transmission chain in Câmara de Lobos, 78 new contacts were identified, which are currently being evaluated and tested.

20^th April
Madeira registers two new positive cases in the last 24 hours and one recovery in Porto Santo. 31 suspected cases await laboratory results. No deaths have been recorded. Two patients were transferred to the isolation unit dedicated to covid-19 at the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, due to pre-existing medical conditions.

19^th April
Madeira registers 19 new cases of coronavirus, 16 in Câmara de Lobos, 1 in Funchal and 2 in Porto Santo. In the last 24 hours 43 additional suspected cases were detected and 3 recovered cases. No deaths from COVID-19 infection were recorded in Madeira.

18^th April
The patient hospitalized in the intensive care unit dedicated to covid-19 is now able to breathe without a ventilator. No deaths have been recorded.
10 new positive cases registered in Câmara de Lobos and 40 people are waiting for test results of covid-19. Announced this morning by the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, raising the total number to 64 positive cases, an increase of 18.5% in 24 hours.
Due to the exponential increase in cases, a sanitary fence was applied in the parish of Câmara de Lobos, placing more than 18 thousand people in mandatory isolation during the next 15 days.

17^th April
Madeira registers the seventh recovery case, after testing negative for the virus twice, at least 24 hours apart, according to guidelines. No deaths due to COVID-19 infection were recorded in Madeira.

11^th April
Madeira registers the second recovery case. A resident of Ponta do Sol, who had returned from United Kingdom tested positive for covid-19 and was in quarantine, declared recovered after two negative tests (under home isolation). To date, no deaths due to COVID-19 infection have been recorded in the region.

10^th April
As for the two coronavirus patients who were hospitalized, one remains in intensive care unit dedicated to covid-19 and the other discharged and transferred to a hotel where he will remain in isolation. No deaths from COVID-19 infection were recorded in Madeira.

5^th April
As of today, Madeira has 1 recovered case and 47 positive cases of COVID-19. So far, 315 suspected cases have been identified of which 260 tested negative. Further statistics show that there are 643 people under ‘active surveillance’ with a further 231 people in ‘self-surveillance.’ No deaths due to COVID-19 infection were recorded in Madeira. Only 2 coronavirus patients remain hospitalized at Dr. Nélio Mendonça in Madeira, although 1 in stable condition, the other patient was transferred to intensive care unit and ventilated, as condition worsened overnight. The other 45 patients remain in isolation, 42 in their homes and the 3 Dutch citizens at Quinta do Lorde.

4^th April 
Madeira registers the first recovery case, as one of the four Dutch tourists at Quinta do Lorde was considered recovered after testing negative twice. Today returned to her country of origin. No deaths have been recorded.

3^rd April
Madeira has 44 positive cases of COVID-19. So far, 277 suspected cases have been identified of which 232 tested negative. Further statistics show that there are 691 people under ‘active surveillance’ with a further 428 people in ‘self-surveillance.’ No deaths have been recorded.
Only 2 coronavirus patients remain hospitalized in Madeira, although without the need for intensive care. The other 42 patients remain in isolation, 38 in their homes and the four Dutch citizens at Quinta do Lorde.

2^nd April
As of today Madeira has 43 positive cases of COVID-19. So far, 257 suspected cases have been identified of which 212 tested negative. Further statistics show that there are 717 people under ‘active surveillance’ with a further 559 people in ‘self-surveillance.’
Only 2 coronavirus patients remain hospitalized in Madeira, although without the need for intensive care. The other 41 patients remain in isolation, 37 in their homes and the four Dutch citizens at Quinta do Lorde. No deaths due to COVID-19 infection were recorded in Madeira.

Madeira has 43 positive cases of COVID-19. So far, 240 suspected cases have been identified of which 197 tested negative. Further statistics show that there are 724 people under ‘active surveillance’ with a further 1698 people in ‘self-surveillance.’
Only one (1) coronavirus patient remains hospitalized in Madeira, although without the need for intensive care. The other 42 patients remain in isolation, 38 in their homes and the four Dutch citizens at Quinta do Lorde. To date, no deaths due to COVID-19 infection have been recorded in the region.
April Workers' Pavilion prepared to accommodate the homeless. 50 beds will be made available as well as all the necessary conditions, so homeless people can self-isolate during covid-19 pandemic.

As of today, Madeira has 42 positive cases of COVID-19. So far, 225 suspected cases have been identified of which 183 tested negative. Further statistics show that there are 728 people under ‘active surveillance’ with a further 1699 people in ‘self-surveillance.’

As of today, Madeira has 40 positive cases of COVID-19. So far, 214 suspected cases have been identified of which 170 tested negative. Further statistics show that there are 792 people under ‘active surveillance’ with a further 1670 people in ‘self-surveillance.’ No deaths have been recorded.
Only one (1) coronavirus patient remains hospitalized in Madeira, although without the need for intensive care. The other 39 patients remain in isolation, 35 in their homes and the four Dutch citizens at Quinta do Lorde.

29^th March
As of today, Madeira has 39 positive cases of COVID-19. So far, 198 suspected cases have been identified of which 155 tested negative. Further statistics show that there are 766 people under ‘active surveillance’ with a further 1462 people in ‘self-surveillance.’
Only one (1) coronavirus patient remains hospitalized in Madeira, although without the need for intensive care. The other 38 patients remain in isolation, 34 in their homes and the four Dutch citizens at Quinta do Lorde. No deaths due to COVID-19 infection were recorded in Madeira.

The President of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque issued a new mandate with regards to restrictions on movement and social isolation to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
From 00.00 on the 31st of March the following measures come into force:
1 - From the 31st of March only essential business may remain open.
2 - All Hotel suspicious cases must undergo compulsory 14-day isolation period.
3 - A reduction from 120 to 100 passengers to airports Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo and Porto Santo allowed per week. All passengers are directed to comply with mandatory 14-day quarantine
4 - Reorganisation of the health system. Cessation of mobility between existing health units to prevent cross-contamination.
5 - Reinforcement of circulation measures and social gatherings are strictly limited to two people.

26^th March
There are currently twenty (20) positive cases of Covid-19 on the island comprising four Dutch tourists and sixteen Madeirans, including one case concerning a passenger who was compulsorily quarantined at Quinta do Lorde in Caniçal and five members of one family who contracted the virus after a recent trip Spain.
Since February 29, of the 105 suspected cases, 85 have since been confirmed as negative. In addition, there are currently 835 people who are under ‘active surveillance’ at home and a further 1.591 people undergoing ‘self-surveillance.’ No deaths have been recorded.
All arrivals in Madeira are required to enter mandatory quarantine and undergo testing.
The Regional Government has requested that all remaining tourists on the island return to their countries of residence. Furthermore, as of Wednesday 25th of March, only those travelling for medical reasons can fly to and from the island.

25^th March
Four new confirmed cases were announced, bringing the total to 16 positive cases of Coronavirus in Madeira (12 are patients residing in Madeira and 4 are tourists of Dutch nationality). Of the 94 suspected cases, 78 were negative, 806 are in active surveillance in their homes and 1678 in self-surveillance.
Three of the patients who were hospitalized in the isolation unit of Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça were sent home to continue isolation in their homes. All these patients are in stable condition and none required intensive care. No deaths from COVID-19 infection were recorded in Madeira.

24^th March
Coronavirus cases continue to rise in Madeira, with 12 confirmed positive cases, in which eight refer to residents of Madeira. Five have mild symptoms, recovering at home. The remaining seven are hospitalized in the dedicated coronavirus treatment unit, at the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, in stable condition.
Madeira has 459 persons under active surveillance by the health authorities and 1,532 persons in self-surveillance at home. No deaths due to COVID-19 infection were recorded in Madeira.
Passengers arriving in Madeira - 66 have been transferred to a specific quarantine centre at Quinta do Lorde resort at Caniçal and 15 are in mandatory quarantine at Hotel Praia Dourada in Porto Santo. All cases are of external origin.

23^rd March
Madeira, like many other tourist destinations, has been affected by the outbreak of the Coronavirus. As a precaution, many of the scheduled events have been postponed this year. This, of course, includes the famous and vibrant Flower Festival which is now scheduled for September 2020.
The Regional Government of Madeira and the Government of the Republic of Portugal have shown a proactive and sensible approach to the pandemic, and by declaring a State of Emergency are doing everything in their power to create a safe environment for their citizens. As of the 23rd of March, nine positive coronavirus cases had been recorded in Madeira. Tourists are being flown home to their countries of origin and all hotels closed, a specific quarantine centre have been set up both here in Madeira at Quinta do Lorde resort at Caniçal and on Porto Santo island. In a world spinning out of control, Madeira has remained calm and is quietly getting on with life as best it can under the circumstances.
Despite the virus Madeira remains as always a floating garden that’s always Summer. With a stoic and practical population, the island will soon rise again and shine as a beacon of all that is good in the world – safe, clean, beautiful and nature at its best, not forgetting its warm welcome to all those who visit our magical island.

19^th March
Madeira registers two new positive cases of coronavirus. No deaths have been recorded.
In total 3 positive cases are confirmed. A tourist arriving from Holland 5 days ago and a Madeiran resident arriving from Dubai, both quarantined immediately.
The Government of the Portuguese Republic declares state of emergency as of 00.00 today 19 March, for 15 days.
We hope that with this measure, we are able to contain the spread of the virus on Madeira Island.

17^th March
A tourist who recently arrived in Madeira has tested positive for coronavirus and is now in quarantine.

16^th March
The President of the Regional Government of Madeira announced today, March 16, that there is no case of coronavirus or covid-19 reported on the Island of Madeira. To try to maintain Madeira virus free, all passengers arriving at Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira Airport will be under mandatory quarantine for 14 days, until further notice.
This means that all Tour Operators are cancelling their flights to Madeira and Porto Santo except for return flights for tourists already on the Island.
Hopefully soon things will returns to normal and Madeira will maintain it corona free status and welcome visitors to Madeira’s always Summer Climate. We will keep you updated in the coming days.
