The island of Madeira "can not conceive the tourism product without the existence of golf", because the Pearl of the Atlantic "wins a lot" with this type of offer.

These are the words of the Regional Secretary of Tourism and Culture, Eduardo Jesus, who yesterday attended the first of three "landmark conferences" included in the commemorative activities of '30 years of Palheiro Golf'.

The meeting, which took place this Wednesday in Funchal, and brought together several personalities, including numerous practitioners of the sport, served to assess the status of this offer in the Best Destination Island in the World. And it was confirmed that it is doing well and is recommended, especially because Madeira will soon have another new golf course at Ponta do Pargo.

One of the hoteliers present at the conference, and according to Madeira's newspaper Diário de Notícias, said that "in Madeira we have another product that we have to differentiate" from the other offers, as "we are a 'golf +' destination, meaning we are golf plus gastronomy, golf plus culture, among others".

Golf in Madeira hits “historic highs”

In the first two months of this year, golf will have generated €837,898, an income 39% higher than that collected in the same period in 2022 (601. 093), while data for January and February, published on the Pxo Golf Club website, says that "the region's three golf courses - Palheiro Golf, Porto Santo Golf Course and Santo da Serra - are earning more money per round" and that "they sold 13,618 rounds, which corresponds to 6.4% more than the previous year (12,796)", adds DN.

In turn, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has promoted surveys of users of the three golf courses in Madeira, which revealed "historic highs" recorded in the last 10 years, even buying with the period before the severe crisis caused by the pandemic.

"2022 beat all records of the last decade, in terms of rounds played and revenues" and, "the value of the revenue generated by the golf industry in the Region, in that year, was measured by direct sales, called 'green fee' (access to the course), but its business represents impacts exceeding eight million euros, if expenses with services, hotels, restaurants, transport and related activities are considered," adds the same source.
