• Madeira restores its built heritage

The Madeira Regional Government's investment in the built heritage of the Pearl of the Atlantic over the last four years already exceeds the 13 million euro investment made by the current executive.

The island of Madeira has a very valuable and very old built heritage, the result of its six centuries of history, since the settlement of the island that began around 1425.

Aware that this heritage is extremely important, and that it needs to be duly preserved, the President of the Regional Government believes that this is a sector in which it is important to invest, and as such, it is an "important goal" of his tutelage, he began by stating during his recent visit to the Madeiran Parliament.

According to Miguel Albuquerque, his executive since 2019, has already invested 13 million euros in heritage, with recovery works carried out in "181 properties have been classified". Interventions that in the opinion of the ruler, aim at the "enhancement and requalification of Cultural Heritage, material and immaterial".

"The roof of the Cathedral of Funchal was restored, an extraordinary work that won the Gulbenkian award and the APOM award. The work of the Santa Clara Convent will be inaugurated soon. Next is the Romanticism Museum, in Quinta do Monte, which is being redeveloped in an excellent way. And the Fortress of São Tiago, where the Museum of Archaeology will be opened", as well as the "offer materialized in the restoration of the Solar do Aposento, in Ponta Delgada", reminded the Madeira's chief executive.

Still on the cultural aspect, the President of the Government also recalled that "the Photography Museum, considered the Museum of the Year by APOM in 2020, was reopened" and, on the other hand, "important cultural spaces were also made available to the population: Quinta Magnólia - Arts Space, São Cristóvão Manor House, Torre do Capitão", said the leader.

The Regional Government also supported the recovery of the Babosas Chapel, St. John the Baptist Church in Fajã da Ovelha and the Treasury Rooms in Machico and Ribeira Brava.

In total, 181 buildings in the Autonomous Region of Madeira have been classified as of heritage interest, according to Miguel Albuquerque, who also recalled that in 2021, the classification processes of the Farmers' Market and the Porto Santo Primary School will be concluded.

"Besides the networking with national and international organizations, the application of new technologies in the scope of the organizations that deal with culture and heritage, is now a reality in our Region", highlighted Miguel Albuquerque.

Finally, the governor took the opportunity to reveal that the "Madeira Museums" portal, "has reached more than 200 thousand views", and highlighted the fact that the Madeira Archives and Library is today, "in a remarkable way, the second digital archive in the country, with about 2.2 million digital files online and more than 900 thousand descriptive records of documents, only behind the National Archives of Torre do Tombo", he concluded.
