• Madeira sings to the "Kings"

After the main festivities of Christmas and New Year's Eve in Madeira Island are over, the spirit of this season will only end after next weekend. That's why there will still be plenty of fun for those who are still here or those who are about to arrive at the Pearl of the Atlantic to celebrate the "Kings".

On January 5th, 2024, the magnificent celebration known as the "Cantares dos Reis do Funchal" (Singing of the Kings of Funchal) will once again bring thousands of people to the Jardim Municipal (Funchal Municipal Garden) in the heart of Madeira's capital, in what is one of the warmest moments of this Christmas season.

Several musical groups will perform, the majority of whom are from the various cultural centres known as "Casas do Povo" located throughout Madeira Island. The "Kings" of these shows, of course, are the local musicians, who will be dressed up and playing traditional Madeiran instruments such as the "rajão" and the "braguinha." Simultaneously, they will sing traditional songs with allusions to verses and ancestral songs rescued from the traditional songbook of this ancient island region.

The event begins at 19h01, and for the occasion, 4,000 thousand slices of King Cake will be served, accompanied by a sour cherry from Curral das Freiras.
