It has become a tradition at the time of the grape harvest for the island to celebrate the Madeira Wine Festival, one of this destination's tourist attractions, which returns this year from 30th August to 6th September.
This festival starts in Funchal, with street entertainment provided by various regional folklore groups, and traditional music. In the downtown area of Funchal, the city will be decked out with exhibits showing how the wine is made and there will also be wine-tasting, displays of gastronomy and regional handicrafts. This festival's programme will also include the European Folklore Week.
On Saturday, 5th September, in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, there is an ethnic procession which portrays the Grape Harvest Festival followed by an opportunity to recreate the old way of treading the grapes, available for everyone to take part and which attracts many visitors every year. All the events take place in a very festive atmosphere with plenty of entertainment and tradition. So don’t miss it!
