This year the Madeira Wine Festival will take place from Sunday the 26th of August to Sunday the 9th of September and is believed to be one of the islands biggest tourist attractions. The event aims to re-create the old viniculture traditions that have existed in Madeira for centuries. The festival comprises of the traditional treading of the grapes in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, accompanied by good food and musical entertainment. Funchal pays homage to the beauty of the vine through static cultural displays, re-enactments, folklore demonstrations as well as the chance to sample the wonder of the island – Madeira wine. This years event also incorporates European Folklore Week (26th – 29th August).
Entry is free, and for those wishing to experience the treading of the grapes, you can catch either the 3, 7 or 96 Rodoeste Bus to Câmara de Lobos from the company’s depot on Avenida do Mar.
