Madeira was named "Europe's Leading Island Destination" once again at the 28th edition of the "World Travel Awards" 2021, beating out the other 11 islands that were also up for vote.

Madeira has won this international award for the sixth consecutive year and the eighth time: in 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, and in 2013 and 2014.

In this year's edition, the World Travel Awards nominated the Azores Islands (Portugal), Balearic Islands and Canary Islands (Spain), Crete and Cyclades, Aegean Islands (Greece), Cyprus, Guernsey, Channel Islands, Jersey, Channel Islands, Malta, and even Sardinia and Sicily for Best Island Destination in Europe, which was won by Madeira Island, Portugal.

The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture, who is also the president of the Association for the Promotion of Madeira, considers it to be "a remarkable achievement for Madeira to win the 'Europe's Leading Island Destination' award for the eighth year, thus contributing to giving more consistency to the recognition that the Region has reached the entire world in recent years, and where it stood out in 2020 and 2021 for the confidence generated with the security presented by the destination in the pandemic control”.
Therefore, Eduardo Jesus highlights that the importance of the award “should fill with pride all those who work in Tourism in the Region, as well as the residents who see their land being continually valued internationally, and also the thousands of travellers who visit us, who thus value their holiday destination even more”. "We have reasons to be satisfied also by the way fate reacted to the pandemic, through the affirmation of the security that we live here," Eduardo Jesus concludes.

The 'World Travel Awards' were established in 1993 and are given out annually to recognize, reward, and celebrate achievement in all important sectors of the travel industry, tourism, and hospitality.
