The World Travel Awards have once again named Madeira the "World's Leading Island Destination" for 2021, for the seventh consecutive year.

This is the 28th edition of the World Travel Awards, an initiative founded in 1993 to recognise the best in the tourism industry around the world.

Madeira, which won this award in 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015, has surpassed popular tourist destinations for the seventh year in a row, defeating Bali (2014 winner), Ambergris Caye (Belize), Bali (Indonesia), Barbados, Bora Bora (French Polynesia), Cook Islands, Cozumel (Mexico), Crete (Greece), Fiji, Hawaii, Holbox Island (Mexico), Jamaica, Maldives, Mauritius, Saint Lucia, Sardinia, or Sicily (Italy), as well as Seychelles, Siargao (Philippines), Turks & Caicos Islands and Zanzibar (Tanzania).

Earlier this year, Madeira had already competed and won in the category of ‘Europe's Leading Island Destination 2021’.
