• Marine Turtles of Madeira

The marine turtles of Madeira Island will now benefit from a scientific programme aimed at protecting their local population.

The University of Madeira and the Belmiro de Azevedo Foundation recently signed a cooperation protocol that will allow the creation of suitable infrastructure for the monitoring and scientific development of the two most common species of turtles in Madeira, namely, the 'loggerhead turtle' (Caretta caretta) and the 'green turtle' (Chelonia mydas).

The protocol now established also includes an ocean literacy educational programme that will focus on these particular species to inform the general public about their habitat, aiming to protect them through raising awareness among the human population.

Remember that Portugal has the second-largest maritime area in the European Union, and it is precisely in the Madeira Archipelago that these North Atlantic Sea turtles require greater protection, as it is in this region that the species under study complete their life cycles.
