One of the largest, if not the largest religious festival in Madeira begins on the 14th of August, in Monte.
The festival in honour of Nossa Senhora do Monte, the patron saint of Madeira, celebrated since the early years of the discovery of the island, starts on the 14th of August. Pilgrims from all over Madeira take part in a procession to the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte.
Monte is covered in flowers, and the festivities last all night long, with local food and drink, and a lot of entertainment. Why not go to Monte for a espetada and bolo do caco?
It's a Madeiran festival at its best.
