• New Archaeological Find

Due to routine excavation work at Rua Bom Jesus in Funchal, workers have discovered the foundations to a wall dating back to 1680. According to Rui Carita, Professor of Art History at the University of Madeira the find was simply waiting to be discovered. Later when interviewed he stated that with any city, especially a 600 year old city, there are always archaeological finds waiting to be uncovered.

He went on to say that the foundations to the wall dated back to the late 17th Century and possibly formed the foundation for a wall of a girl’s orphanage. The fragments of brick also found at the location, he confirmed could be found throughout Funchal.
