This year the 21st annual Onion Festival will be held on the 18th, 19th and 20th May in Caniço. This popular event aims to create awareness of the strong and flavoursome ‘Caniceira onion’ and its contribution to the local economy.
The event is one of entertainment and fun. The official opening ceremony takes place at 19:00 on Friday the 18th in the town square and will be closely followed by music from the Caniço and Eiras Philharmonic Band. From 21:00 throughout the three days the town centre will rock to music performed by local musicians, bands and DJ’s. Saturday starts energetically at 18:00 with a demonstration of Korean Martial Arts, while Sundays colourful ‘onion procession’ comprising of decorated floats has to be the main attraction of the event. The procession commences at 16:00 and it is wise to get there early.
This is what Madeirans do best; combining a cultural event with fun, music and entertainment in support of a symbolic local product.
