The Regional Government of Madeira offered Pope Francis a box of cured meats along with a bottle of Madeira Wine.
The initiative came from the IVBAM - Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicrafts Institute, which offered Pope Francis a personalised box of cured meats along with a special edition bottle of Madeira Wine. The regional government took advantage of the Pope's presence in Lisbon (Portugal) during World Youth Day, which took place from Tuesday, August 1st, to Sunday, August 6th, 2023, to present the highest leader of the Catholic Church with two products that represent the best of what is produced on this island.
It is worth noting that the President of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira visited the Vatican at the end of June, and on that occasion, liturgical paraments with Madeira Embroidery, another highly appreciated traditional Madeiran product, were offered to the Pope.
To conclude, the box offered to the Pope, which holds a bottle of Madeira Wine, features a shield of the Autonomous Region of Madeira embedded at the top, as well as a contemporary design created by Madeiran artisan Susana Ornelas using woods from various trees, such as heather, cedar, and tilde, among other species found in the Laurissilva Forest, considered by UNESCO a World Heritage Site.
