On December 31, 2006, Madeira Island, Portugal was awarded the Guinness World Records™ certificate for the largest firework display in the world (see Video).

In 2021, twelve cruise ships were moored in and around the bay, all waiting for the city's famous midnight fireworks display. The Vasco da Gama, Amadea, AIDAmar, Bolette, Queen Elizabeth, Borealis, AIDAsol, AIDAnova, Mein Schiff 3, Sea Cloud Spirit, Marella Explorer, and Mein Schiff Herz were among the luxury cruise ship stopovers scheduled for the end of the year.
