The island of Porto Santo will receive the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve award next Wednesday, October 28th.
The 32nd meeting of the International Coordination Council (ICC) of UNESCO's “Man and the Biosphere” program, this year online, will take place on the 27th and 28th of October.
On the 28th, between 11 am and 2 pm, the future UNESCO Biosphere Reserves will be announced.
At this meeting, the JRC will focus on 30 proposals analyzed, 25 of which refer to new Biosphere Reserves, three of them with a special congratulation for the good work developed in the application, with emphasis on Porto Santo.
At 4:00 pm, the Regional Secretary for the Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Susana Prada, will unveil the sign referring to the official announcement of the island of Porto Santo as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, in Largo do Pelourinho, Vila Baleira.
The application of the island of Porto Santo to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve was based on the sharing of interests, knowledge, experiences and knowledge, focusing on the peculiarities of Porto Santo both in its natural heritage (biological and geological), as well as its cultural heritage ( material and immaterial).
The management of the Porto Santo Island Biosphere Reserve, which will actively involve Porto-santenses, aims to launch new challenges, enhanced by a classification that comes to recognize the existing conditions, the innovative work of nature conservation in close articulation with the people who they inhabit the territory, consolidating the path taken and the work developed over time, with the prospect of an increasingly sustainable and sustained Porto Santo.
