• Quinhentist Market of Machico

The initiative of the Escola Básica e Secundária de Machico, will take place on June 2, 3 and 4, under the theme "Tristão das Damas" and aims to "raise awareness for the defence of Madeiran cultural identity, valuing it in the context of the Portuguese historical heritage".

The presentation of the 16th Quinhentist Market took place recently at São Roque Chapel, in Machico, and expects to receive again a lot of public who come to Machico to relive the historical past that dates back to the beginning of the settlement of Madeira Island. This is an event of "historical recreation", and its main theme is 'Tristão das Damas', described as "one of the main characters of the genesis of the settlement of Machico".

The Organizing Committee of the Quinhentista Market of the Escola Básica e Secundária de Machico, explained through a press release that Tristão das Damas was "the second administrator of the Capitania of Machico" and "a booster of the courtly culture".

According to the teachers, Tristão "expedited parties, tournaments, cavalry games and poetry soirees, being of his authorship three of the poems that integrate Garcia de Resende's Cancioneiro Geral" and, "ordered the construction of the primitive chapel of São Roque, the patron of contagious diseases, as well as the chapel of São João Batista, in the Machico parish church, destined as a family vault, as witnessed by the coat of arms of the Teixeiras, where he is buried".
