The 'LIDL' supermarket chain will invest 100 million euros in Madeira Island, but other investments from 'Pingo Doce' and 'Continente' will continue to increase the number of supermarkets in the Pearl of the Atlantic.

In all, four new supermarkets from the 'LIDL' chain will open in Funchal over the next few months, and this number is likely to increase with two new openings being planned by 'Pingo Doce' and 'Continente' retailers, also for the city of Funchal.

Responsible for the largest increase in the supermarket network in Madeira, comes from the expansion to the island of the German company, LIDL, which publicly announced that it will invest 100 million euros in Madeira, a place where it did not yet have representation.

With a consolidated network in Portugal of 265 shops, the retailer, which has been in mainland territory for 26 years, is now expanding its operation to the Pearl of the Atlantic, where it had initially only planned to open three shops in 2023, but, all indications are that there will be four, the total number of supermarkets to open in the Madeiran capital this year, "thus reinforcing its commitment to the country".

"We will expand to the Autonomous Region of Madeira and we aim to boost the local economy and be closer to our customers on the island," announces LIDL, which promises to "offer maximum quality at the best price, following a strategy of proximity and simplicity towards its customers".

Aware of the island's ultra-peripherality, LIDL promises to "boost the local economy, as usual, not only by establishing partnerships with local suppliers but also by recruiting employees". In this sense, "in 2023 about 150 new jobs will be created, with purchases from Madeiran suppliers, commercial and services, valued at about 20 million euros," says the same source of the retailer.

Sustainability is part of the company's core business, and in this expansion of its operation to Madeira, it continues to have environmental concerns, so the new LIDL shops "will be equipped with photovoltaic panels, as well as multi-standard electric charging stations and fast charging, which allow 80% of the battery to be recharged in just 30 minutes, allowing a supply during a regular shopping trip" as well as, "its fleet will also be 100% electric.
