• São Pedro Palace

In the São Pedro parish you will still find some of the manorial houses of Funchal’s most influent families at that time. The counts of Carvalhal and Lombada were famous because of the ostentation of their way of living, of which the palaces they lived in still bear witness.

One of the most beautiful is without any doubt the noble house of the ‘Carvalhais’ family from the 18th century that has its highlights in the seven elaborated forged iron balconies and the doorway flanked with two beautiful iron lanterns.

During its long years of existence, this palace has already served as hotel, college and international club. Today it accommodates the Regional Archive and the Natural History department of the Municipal Museum, which also includes an aquarium.
