Although many walks are not strenuous and some could even be compared to a Sunday stroll, you should always wear proper shoes or even walking boots.

Many paths can be under repair or requiring attention. Loose stones and sometimes mud can obstruct the paths, which can be very slippery. Non-slip soles and well-supported uppers are the ideal, especially as we are often tempted to go off the well-beaten tracks to view something interesting.

Good walking shoes and boots can be purchased in Funchal, but a well worn in pair will ensure optimum comfort.

We strongly advise against attempting any of the mountainous walks in rubber soles or sandals. The fewer problems we have with our clothing and footwear - the more we can enjoy the spectacular scenery.
